| Be very carefull with any network tweeking apps.. I have heard some horror stories ! Well as stated above, upload bandwidth is THE most important bit. I occasionally run a server on my ADSL connection with only 256 Kbits/sec up I can host 10 players quite well you must set the "max_rate" cvar to an appropriate setting I set this to 3250 when running a 10 player server, which is a little on the low side, but just about adequate for 10 players. Its works nice and smooth with just 8, and I generally start getting bad lag if I try hosting 12 players. My suggested max_rate settings are: up-to 8 players 3750 (Bandwidth needed = 30Kbytes/s = 234 Kbits/s) 8 to 10 players 4000 (Bandwidth needed = 39Kbytes/s = 312 Kbits/s) 10 - 14 players 5250 (Bandwidth needed = 72Kbytes/s = 574 Kbits/s) 14 - 18 players 6500 (Bandwidth needed = 114Kbytes/s = 914 Kbits/s) 18 - 24 players 10000 (Bandwidth needed = 234Kbytes/s =1.9 Mbits/s) 24 - 32 players 15000 (Bandwidth needed = 469Kbytes/s =3.75 Mbits/s) Those max_rate numbers are bytes per second per slot (player) divide those numbers by 1024 to get Kb/s (Kilobytes per second) multiply by max slots to get your max possible used bandwidth. So for a maximum of 8 players: 3750 / 1024 = 3.66 * 8(# players) = 29.3Kbytes/s * 8(# bits in a byte) = 234Kbits/s of course if you have the spare bandwidth you can just set to 15000 and be done with it ![]() Many people get confused what rate to set to, and since the rate needed will fluctuate during gameplay (depending on what is actually happening at the time), and indeed some maps need more bandwidth than others (entity count), and of course the actual number of players on the server, its easy to get confused... keep to the above suggestions and you won't go far wrong ![]() NOTE: WW needs less bandwidth than RtCW (the weapons fire much slower )btw, most WW maps play best at between 3 v 3 and 8 v 8 players I think the ideal number is 6 v 6 (but this is subjective) and all play horrible (IMO) over 10 v 10 (too chaotic )to test your upload, simply upload a large file to somewhere that you know you have a good connection to (your ISP's web-space) make note of the time it takes, and you can work out your upload bandwidth... do this at different times of the day to see if you get effected by local traffic during peek times. OR use some kind of on-line bandwidth tester like: For US / Canada players: http://www.dslreports.com/stest For UK / European players: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp Hewster

| now if its old ntl motorola modem ,,,they can be uncapped becoming unlimited upload, if its the terayon modem ,,they are harder to uncap ,,,unless you manage to get one that is on the engineers mac id,,thus also being unlimited, the main thing with ntl is the mac id as this is registered to your bandwith which is set by ntl ,,,, not sure if there is a way to manualy scramble your id hopefully you got the motorola one ,,way easyer Last edited by EL-PASSdaBONG; January 10th, 2005 at 01:47 PM.. |

nope ,,the engineers uncap all there modems for speed ,,mainly for upload while at you house they often give you them for test reasons ,,,,,, maily if you net drops connection all the time which is common at ntl azh just needs to pull the plug for a few days and report,,,when they cant find the fault they will supply a engineers moden ,normaly the same as the one you got,,all he has to do is open it up ,then open his own up and set the same ,,,jobs done ,,no more probs with net no modems were hurt in the making of this post ,,this is only known as a friend worked at ntl Last edited by EL-PASSdaBONG; January 10th, 2005 at 03:51 PM.. |

| ok now im confused -- Docsys Modems get their Cap info from a Server at your ISP - to uncap it you can tell the modem to get its Docsys from a server u designate and u can supply your own cap info to your modem -- which is highly illegal in VA USA im not sure what your talking about by NTL my modem is a terayon |

| Yeah, you're probably right on that. And Gaming forums already has a Ventrillo server. So that won't help. I like AzH's Idea of a local UK gaming server. We really need one right now for all the players from that country!
