Invalid Cd Key ??? Hello, some weeks ago i bought RTCW from an old friend, who never played online... So it's definetely a valid CD Key - i played some weeks, and everything worked fine! But the last days and ...today... I often got "invalid cd key" I tried many things... erased the key file...and typed it in again in options-enter cd key! a new file was generated, bur nevertheless I get: "Invalid CD KEY"! This is impossible, i have the original cd at home... I don't know what to do...`? can somebody help me... If the question should be wrong here, please tell me, who i can ask!! Thank U unterguru |
Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? Go to your RTCW "Main" folder (For Me It's C:\Program Files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein\Main) and look for a file called "rtcwkey". Try right clicking it and go to properties. Now mark it as "Read Only". Now see of you still get the same error. :) |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? First, thank u very much... OK...I tried all your hints! (even 4. from the link u gave me) nothing works... Friday the key was valid! Sometimes it is invalid and after an hour it is valid...hmmmmmmmm... If someone else would use my key, there would not come: invalid cd key, or? I think there would come: Duplicate CD Key... Does anybody know how to get (buy) a new key? (In Germany i cannot buy it.. *g*) In RTCW the key doesnot work, too, so the master server does not accept it! any tips? PS. when i enter the key in RTCW it is accepted! |

I think I remember, that if someone is online with your CD Key, and they are on the same server as you, you will both be kicked from Punkbuster for Duplicate GUID/CD Key. I'll search around a bit more to see if I can find any thing else on this problem. :thumbsup: |

Make sure you don't have a "rtcwkey" file in your WildWest directory NOTE: Don't ever enter your CD key from within WildWest, always do it when running standard wolf (this is true for all RtCW mods) Might not be your problem, but I do remeber this issue when players enter their CD key from within WildWest. (Note: in version 1.6 I have removed the option to enter your CD key from within the mod) Hewster |
Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? [off topic] the talking toaster (role your mouse over it a few times) is a wildwest treat/punnishment for those regular players of Wild West that get 300 posts. I'm lucky that I already passed that mark before queeg inflicted it upon us. [/off topic] Try what Hew's posted and see if that solves the problem Also make sure that you've got the fresh newly entered cd key in you're cd file before making it read only as making an incorect one read only won't solve anything. Sometimes the last couple of #'s of the cd key get dropped for some strange reason (which is why we make it read only so it won't be messed with after setting) Also, from what I've read so far, I don't believe that he's got a duplicate cd error just a key file getting messed up. Do give us feed back as to weather our adviced helped or not. If not if you can give us any more info that also might be helpful. I got another Idea. I remember as I visited you last week we all had annoying key errors the whole time! As you told me you were using your strange router the first time. So maybe it makes something wrong with IP/port masquerading!? I also remember that one time I lost my connection for no reason even we changed nothing in network configuration. Perhaps the authserver cannot communicate with you correctly sometimes. Try to use your standalone DSL-modem again a watch if you have the same probs. |
Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? If you don't enter the CD-key within ww, then some servers will kick you for "empthy cd-key is not allowed". If you have trouple with invalid cd-key then try start ww from rtcw instead of ww. |
Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? Thanks... I have only one file "rtcwkey" in the whole RTCW Folder and this one is in Main Folder! i erased it, and generated a new file with RTCW... (not with WW!) a new rtcwkey is in main Foldernow (i made it "read only", too) ...but the key still is not accepted! while typing in the key, the last two characters are - "d8" in the file later on, there is a"[]" instead of a "d8" ! (Maybe the "[]" is a crazy looking 0, but that does not matter...) But the file always looked that way, and it worked! @Rudi: I tried it with and without router... there was no difference...so the router is OK! I even checked it with my laptop and my PC just using the modem, without router: but "INVALID CD KEY"... (in RTCW as well as in WW) so I think it can only be the master server! ... do the master server administrators know, that sth. doesn't work? any other tips??? *praying* but Call of Duty works fine ... haha! :-) PS. I wrote an email to the technical support of RTCW, but i guess they won't help me! |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? I found out, that nothing can help me... It is unbelievable ... Maybe it is my provider, who makes mistakes. I don't know. THE STORY: Yesterday I tried it again: "Invalid CD Key", okay, not amazing...so I send the rtcwkey to a friend in Stuttgart, he should try it! He had an invalid key, too (using my file the right way). Then I send the file to a UNIX User ... he checked it ---> key was valid! He send the File back to me ---> key was invalid! So, I know, the key works, but not on my machine! (And also not on my Laptop...) And when I tried the keys of the other guys (so we changed the keys for a short while for testing) they were working!!! My key is the only one who doesnot work on my PC... I hate it! :mad: The last two characters are only for ingame typing of the key...they are not written in the file and the strange "[]" is a line break in the windows editor! |

It is true, the last 2 digits of your key are not needed, they are some kind of hash for a preliminary check of you key when you first enter it in-game, and they will be removed by the game once the key is validated. The only last thing I can think of is... do you enter the cd key in lower case ? ie: a not A, z not Z ect ? If you open the rtcwkey in wordpad it should look something like this: Code: abc1abcdefghij1aHewster |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? Tell you what... Delete the file all together and then enter they key again in the menu. Then mark the file as read only before joining the game. I bet that will do it.. |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? hmmmz dont get me wrong ive seen people been kicked alot lately by means of duplicate Pbguid's unterguru & rudi share same pbguid i wonder why , maybe rudi sold his copy to you unterguru but maybe im wrong , i saw both rudi and u once beeing kicked on same pbguid on rockridge and on lonewolf.. if u dont believe me try looking @ www.yawn.be and lookup your nickname then click the partial pbguid and then ud see the nicklist people used before ... maybe it explains alot :) |

Cause I wanted to check the game out...and he came online then and we were kicked! And he is the one who is always trying to help me!!! I know him for some years... Well, I bought that game from a 16 year old boy... (my girlfriends brother, who definetely does not know RUDI)! *g* But it was quite clever Sherlock...It could have been possible...but it isn't! PS. just to get it to know: what does that list at yawn mean to me. there are 16 player who had this PB guid before...??? |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? LOL - I had the same problem early on. And couldn't get it sorted till I marked it as read only.... after that it worked. The trick is to mark it Read Only immediately after it works. I caught it at the right time and I haven't had a probem since.... Something just aint' quite right with the system.... And also make sure that the working directory in the windows Icons is always set to the RtCW directory. That can mess things up too I expect... |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? untergurus daily news: yesterday i have been at rudis home! There everything worked fine! At the moment i got 4 valid keys, to test! ---> they were working! Then i drove home...all the 4 keys did not work! I called rudi --> At his PC all the 4 keys were valid! i tried again...all invalid.... Today in the morning at 8 o clock, I tried again...and look there... it was working! So I guess my provider causes timeouts while connecting to wolfauthorize.idsoftware.com! and this only when there are many people who are online! Does anybody know, (how to find a forum the admins are in) or how to contact the admins of this server...(wolfauthorize.*.*) if they would take look at the logfile my problem would be solved! I run a Windows XP proffessional SP1! But i will try linux *g*! ... fed up of windows! |
Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? You can email Activision Support but they won't help. All they will say is they have no control over that server. :( :( :( Give it a try though maybe you'll get lucky! |

It was a PB fault...after deactivating and activating the PB! every key was working ---> 5 minutes before I tried the keys, and only saw: "invalid CD key"! So it must have been a problem with the PBguid... maybe it is local stored...ore sth. like that! Thank u all ... i HOPE that I won't see ya in that thread again! |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? I dont know exactly what it is...but yesterday I had the problem again... and deacticating...did not help! The errormessage: "PB has to be actived" was not on my screen. So there was just an "invalid CD key"! But after 15 minutes watching TV i tried again, and...errormessage: "PB has to be actibated" so i activated it, played 2 hours, but then it didn't work again! ...after an "unknown server error" So the solution only works sometimes, or it was just luck! hmmmmmmm... I heard Trojans can cause those probs, too... but i guess i do not have any virus! |

If you use this online virusdetector you might be supprised what you have on your hd. http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/Msie/index.php Click agree and then check all options in "Scan Options" and then check the drive you want to scan. and then click "Start Scanning". |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? With "TheCleaner" 5 Trojans found...hihi...maybe the online-virus-check is not that secure! But not a danger one! So that was probably not the problem... (But I still have the "syscfg32" - process running in my task manager...this is a trojan, too, but I have to search a better Virus scanner!) Yesterday it helped to get a new IP, then the key worked...hmmmm....Does the master server only allow some IPs to play?? i dont know... |

Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? yes ... i always try some IPs with some KEYs and some SERVERs ... because I hope to get to know where the error is to find! but after all the trojans deleting...i had no invalids yesterday...but i guess that wil come today... *g* PS. I had the syscfg32.exe runnin in my task manager...it was hard to delete it! A backdoor trojan, that u get over MIRC... And it was not found ba any Virus-Checker...I downloaded a lot..so i deleted it myself! |

But after every Map on the Rio Grande : "unknown Server error" I had to connect again... I heard this has something to do with the maploading time! PS. Did you call your "main" folder ---> "main2" ? I read this in a [......]readme.txt in the "WW" folder... |
Re: Invalid Cd Key ??? nope Rtcw Main folder is just that, labled main That glich is due to a PB update but we are working with them (and also in our own code as well) to fix that. For now you'll just have to reconect like the rest of us with not so fast machines... |
