undead are best in game (abominations are in fact the most powerful unit you can build). orcs are second best because of their ugprades for the buildings, and their units and very durable. Then footman second as they are an all round race. Night elves come last as they are the weakest units, 10 archers could get completely decimated by 6-7 orc grunts. Night elves also dont have any melee units (not including treants) apart from hero, but he sucks.
ah, druids of the claw, forgot about those. But the thing is, you wouldnt build those as your mainstain unit, and there not very good melee units at that (i think, please correct me if im wrong)
You're right, the Night Elves do suffer in the melee department.
I find that two Druids of the Claw go along way in providing support for an otherwise ranged-heavy Night Elven warband. With two of them to cast Rejuv when you need it, they can tank pretty well... and two of them supporting Illidan can turn the tide. I consider Huntresses to be melee due to thier extremely short range, that bouncing glaive is nice.
My favorite race is the Night Elves. Great physical, and magic.
Nothing like a lvl 10 Demon Hunter, 2 Huntresses, 2 Archers, 2 Dryiads*sp*, 2 Bear-formed elves, *forgot name*, and one in normal form, so he can use Roar, and 2 Chimeras.

I don't like the demon hunter... I jsut don't like him... I'm not for the passive spells (when I finally found a target for the mana stealing spell, my hero's death , that flamething can also be done with an item (which you find alot of times in one single map), and... well yeah that lvl 6 spell is cool... but then I'd rather take star fall)
