Most "cool" custom abilities are made the following way:
Make a 'dummy' ability in the ability editor, and set all damagefields etc. to 0. (If you want the spell to be targetted, you'll have to take e.g. Holy light as dummy ability. Otherwise take roar or something...).
Then go to the triggereditor, and mess around with the triggers...
Event: a unit casts an ability
Condition: Ability being cast equal to 'Dummy-ability'
Action: Whatever you want to happen... Like
Unit - Set life of 'casting unit' to life of 'casting unit' + 500 to make a heal.. However, this kind of actions are useless, since there already are abilities like this, or you can easily make an ability liek this using holy light or healing wave, ...
