Default NIC Cards

Morning everyone, I posted a question yesterday on how I can properly set up a LAN game and I thank everyone that helped. However one of my PC using a 3COM NIC card is not working correctly. I can't ping to the other PC. I was thinking about getting a netgear NIC. Can I mix and match cards like that? Thank you!!

Not sure on the specs of that one. When setting up a lan network you should stay with the same make of nic cards to avoid conflicts. Also it is easier to debug if any should arise. I personally prefer the Dlink 100 megabit card

Cool..thanks for the info. I am using a netgear hub so I think I just dish out the cash and get 2 identical nic.

Can the pc's talk to each other using Microsoft Networking ?
ie you see both devices in Network Neighborhood..

Msn networking is good if your using NT or windows 2000 advanced server but not for 98 or 95 nics are just as good for this purpose

It looks like your Nics are not configured properly. But it can be a number of reasons why they cannot see each other.

Spending money on new Network cards is not a good idea unless they are faulty, just as long as they talk the same language, frame type and are connected by the correct cable you should be fine.

Thanks thats good to know. I am going to try and get a 3COM tech to help me out. That is if I can get through. Hopefully they can figure it out.

You won't be able to see each other in Network Neighborhood, unless you have file and print sharing turned on. Make sure you are on the same ip scheme, subnet, workgroup, blah blah blah.

BTW... the Netgear 10/100 cards work great! It doesn't matter if you have different brand NICS as long as they are all the same speed or autosensing, and they are all ethernet (duh). But, don't get a new NIC if you don't need to.
