UT at the podium! Share your opinions pls!

OKay.. I got a few gripes about this wonderful game, Unreal Tournament. The biggest downfall in this game, and I mean big, is how the server is run, and the lack of.

Bare with me pls. http://boards.ioerror.com/smile.gif
UT has hundreds, even thousands of maps, skins and mods. So many you can never find a site that has them all. The problem lies within the server. As most of us here, who bashes QuakeXXX games, they have an advantage, and it is how the server is run.

Tell me pls, what is the point if you're a multiplayer, having all kinds of skins/voices and a lesser degree, maps.. if the server doesn't carry it?? YES, we accept the fact that you're just gonna have to deal with it.. but c'mon, that ruins the beauty and the flexablity of playing UT.

Does it not? I have a few kewl skins, worthless to have if i may say so, unless i find a site that has the same one, which is improbable to know without actually connecting to one. The v4.13 have the ability to redirect maps and mods to another site to eliminate the cost of bandwidth the server must supply in order to upload it to the users. Great Idea! Unfortunately.. there aren't too many around taking advantage of this.

Needless to say, that doesn't cure with dealing with the varieties of skins/voices. I cannot see the harm of having it u/l to the server a skin or voice that it doesn't have.
Sure, later on the server may have hundreds of skins & voices after a month, but hey.. thats the life of running a game server. You want to provide, please and make them come back for more! http://boards.ioerror.com/smile.gif

Whether my discussion here makes no sense or it is irrelevant, its bothersome to know it has a disability that has the potential to achieve a total universal enviroment for the end user. I would like hear everyone's point of view on this.

thank you.. and have a nice fraggin' day http://boards.ioerror.com/smile.gif

have to agee, to a point. i gave up even looking at new skins, for the rarity of any servers carrying them. i tried 2 or 3, then said the hell with it.
my clan has a generic skin i use in any functions involving them, but i liked a couple of different ones along the way.
before i joined the {COS} clan, i had no guilt feelings whatsoever in adding the old "has-beaten-game=true" line to the .ini file to use the Xan skin, which by virtue of its being part of the original pak, was accepted on all servers...

The only problem I have with this stuff is the fact I'm only on a 56k... http://boards.ioerror.com/frown.gif
I can't even play on servers that run custom stuff I don't have because it'll take me like an hour to DL it! And that's providing I don't get a connection failure or the server admin doesn't restart it for some reason...
But on the other hand, I really like the UT skins. The only customs I use online or would anyway are our clan skin and maybe Rumiko which we have on our server anyway http://boards.ioerror.com/smile.gif
Otherwise it's MaleCommando/Nikolai for Bez! hehe

Ya know... i must say I agree.....to sum it up.....Why offer all the goodies when ya can't really...I mean really enjoy them....

In my tiny meaningless opinion...the Server admins need to keep their servers up to date or possibly seperate the servers with the latest and greatest skins...voices..maps and so on.... Needs to be a fine line balance for the guys without the fast connections and the guys with.... hmmmmmmm

Maybe....nudge nudge Eric.... UTCenter could help with this.... imagine a place here that listed the FAST....basic servers...and the FAST loaded full of creature features...servers...

Actually, Khorne is looking into picking out some webspace online and just putting all the latest shit on their... if ya wanna play for fun, you go to the site and download... the server WILL NOT send you the files. And when we have a clan match, we just disable the server packages. Btw, where could I make a suggestion to the UT patch makers? B/c I think they need to implement a "uncomment" feature. Like this:

# ServerPackages=GodVoice

That line would not be loaded onto the server. It would save a load of time with trying to delete and retype server packages. Also, the unrealtournament.ini should be editable from a console window. (Like the Advanced Options are).

the problem is with "fast" servers is that it can be considered "fast" by one person, and then to another be dead slow...

a server list is quite a job, though; it'd have to be updated daily, and i'd need a lot of staff members to do that

Eric you could simply use a self updating set of CGI scripts or ASP would even work. It wouldn't be too much of a problem. Well, it'd still be tough... but you wouldn't be REALLY REALLY pressed for staff.

one of the problems is i'm already pressed for staff http://boards.ioerror.com/wink.gif. luckily i just hired a content director; he'll be doing a bunch of interviews and news for us now
