Default A newbie type question......nooooohh!

Ok I am trying to build a new system which is no-where near top spec as some of u guys but it'll do for me ok?!?
Right! If I get a 250W power supply will it be enough to handle a duron 600mhz and a creative geforce2 MX 32mb ddr?
possibly a stupid question I know but - I dont wanna shell out £350 on a new system only to find it wont work.......
If it will work, how far will I be able to upgrade the processor b4 the power supply will not be enough?
this will be with 128mb ram , 2X 2GB hard disks, CD rom, creative labs sound-card...(dunno which one!)
The main reason Im worried is cos the Intel systems are a big of a power hog...or so Ive heard and need 300w power supplies.

Phew.....this must be my longest post!

mmmm....Well I'm planning on getting at least a 700MHz Athlon and I was told I need at least a 300W power supply so I'd just get a 350WW and then you won't have to get another power supply next time you upgrade....hopefully..

How much are you paying for your Duron CPU?

Yo dude, I have a Copermine P3 750@900, Ge-Force 2 32mb, 3 PCI cards, (modem, sound card, DVD decoder) hard drive ect ect runnibg on a 250 watt ps. Vision Tek, the maker of my card, recomends atleast a 250 watt ps for the vid card. So far I haven't had any problems at all. Just to give ya some info.

HardWare Central is a great place for subjects like these. Under "Discussions" go to CPUs or even the "Motherbords" forum.

At any rate PSUs aren't that expensive. IMO the 250w job oughta do just fine. But a heavier one wouldn't hurt either.

Durons are VERY easy to overclock. I would recommend a better power supply though. At least a 300 or 350. that would leave you lost of "options" and I like those!

Cheers people! So how far do you think I could overclock a duron 600mhz??
As it is I'll be getting a psycho ninja fan on the processor -its certified to handle up to 1.2ghz......hehehhe!

Probably around 800MHz...

Damn...I'm gonna pay about £150 for my Athlon proccessor (£170 at the moment, upgrading in a few months)....oh, waith - that's the 900MHz one

I know nothing about overclocking. Is is it a risk of buggering up your CPU etc even if you have a good fan and a 350W power supply?

Ut gamer - I dunno if ur in the uk but u can get a 900mhz athlon Here for £160 so u wont have too wait long! in the last coupla weeks the duron 600 Mhz has dropped about £10-£15!
Hmm looking around, but I can only see 250w power supplies that come with a case -I need a new case for the atx motherboard Im getting....so I might just "make do" with the 250w psu. unless someone knows where I can get a case and 300w psu for about £50....

My recommendation would be to wait until you can get a 300W power supply - especially with an AMD CPU - from what I've read they usually require a "cleaner" power source than an Intel processor. I recently built a system and found an ATX case with 300W PS for about $100 (which would be around 50 pounds or less)
