Gnutella is peer-to-peer, and if you're on a dialup, often times your PC will end up just being used as a node, passing other people's requests through the system, and never getting any information in return. That's why it can take so long to get a response, if you don't just timeout first. I read a pretty good article about it, but it's kinda off topic.
