UT2004 Wont Install On Vista

Recently, I had got a brand new Vista desktop from Dell. Dell XPS420 with 500gb hard-drive, 2gb ram, 3.16ghz Core 2 Duo processor.

I go and install UT2004. When its finished, I go to run the game and it doesn't work because of a runtime error, which I find strange. Whats more, the game disc gets stuck so I have to stick a pin in the hole on the DVDRW drive to get it out.

You may have to use something called Virtual PC to fix that. You'll also need a copy of XP.

I haven't tried to put XP on Virtual PC yet, but that would give you a place to install UT2K4 w/o problems.

So I would need to buy XP somewhere, format my PC, put Virtual PC on and then UT2004? Seems a little extreme just for a single game.

Yeah. Actually, there may be an alternative because I recently put UT99 on Vista without a problem.

You wouldn't have to format your PC, by the way.

I'll see if I can get UT2K4 to work on my comp. Then we can go from there.

I installed UT2K4 on my Vista comp w/o any problems. It runs w/o problems as well.

From looking at your first post, I think you may have a hardware problem. Software shouldn't stop a disk drive from opening.

Does your DVD-RW do this for other games?

No. I find that very strange that it only does this with the UT2K4 disc though.

(Its not the 6-disc version of UT2K4. Its the DVD-ROM version)

But this is a DVD-RW 16X drive so I can't for the life of me figure out why it does this. I can't figure out why a runtime error would pop up when trying to play the game either.

I have the 6-disk CD version, but I have a DVD-ROM drive.

You may want to see if you have patched the game (you probably did to get the bonus pack). After patching, I was able to play the game w/o the CD.

Also see if you have Service Pack 1 in Vista (just update Vista).

This build of Vista Home Premium came with service pack 1 pre-installed so that shouldn't be a problem. I admit, I tried to launch the game without patching it first but thats only because I havn't recovered the mods including patches from the old PC yet and I'm too lazy to download them all again, lol.

Plus, I have a lot more stuff to recover from the old PC before I format its hard drive so until I have time, I won't be doing much modding for any of my games.

No luck. Patched the game and it still refues to run.

Hell, AVG is even detecting one of the dll's as a trojan now.
