Shutting Down Issue When I play games like warcraft3 or Call of Duty, high reso games usually,My computer would shutdown on it's own.It sounds like an overheating issue, but when i play with my case down,it still happens.I tried getting a fan beside it but it still doesnt work. When it shutsdown,i can't power it up unless i turn off and on my power plug. These are my comp specs. __________________________________________________ __________________ Computer: Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OS Service Pack Service Pack 1 Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1) Computer Name JACKIE (Jackie's PC) User Name User Logon Domain JACKIE Motherboard: CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 1600 MHz (4 x 400) Motherboard Name Unknown Motherboard Chipset Intel Brookdale i845 System Memory 256 MB (PC133 SDRAM) BIOS Type Award Modular (11/05/01) Communication Port Communications Port (COM1) Communication Port Communications Port (COM2) Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1) Display: Video Adapter RADEON 9100 SERIES (128 MB) Video Adapter RADEON 9100 SERIES (128 MB) 3D Accelerator ATI Radeon 9100 (R200) Monitor Philips 107S (107S2) (BZ 212139) Multimedia: Audio Adapter Intel 82801BA(M) ICH2X/M - AC'97 Audio Controller [C-0] Storage: Floppy Drive Floppy disk drive Disk Drive Maxtor 2B020H1 (20 GB, 5400 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) Disk Drive ST340810A (40 GB, 5400 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) Optical Drive ATAPI-CD ROM-DRIVE-52MAX (52x CD-ROM) Optical Drive PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W4012A (40x/12x/40x CD-RW) Partitions: C: (FAT32) 19522 MB (2484 MB free) E: (NTFS) 38162 MB (29764 MB free) Input: Keyboard Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard Mouse Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse (IntelliPoint) Network: Primary IP Address 218.186.74.81 Primary MAC Address 00-04-BD-49-7A-0D Network Adapter Motorola SurfBoard USB Cable Modem SB4100 (218.186.74.81) Peripherals: Printer Epson Stylus COLOR 400 ESC/P 2 USB Device Motorola SurfBoard USB Cable Modem SB4100 |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Ok, with that program you used, under 'computer', it'll say 'Sensor'. "Left click" on it. Monitor the temperatures, during a game minimize it and check it out. It probably is something with the temperature of your CPU or GPU on your graphics card. Also, make sure the fan on the CPU and the fan on the GPU of the graphics card is working. |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Both the fans are definitely working,i can tell when i open the case.Hmmmm, could it be a lack of power? I'm using a 300W power supply and i'm pretty sure my Radeon draws quite alot of power.Thx for your help :D.I'll check it out. EDIT:To the sensor thing,i can't seem to check the temperature. |
Re: Shutting Down Issue i though u can only tell the temp when you have a thermisate in the comp |
Re: Shutting Down Issue 300 Watts should be fine unless you have like 6 15,000 rpm SCSI drives in your computer. :) The minimum power requirement for a P4 is 230 watts. The latest CPU's only need 80-90 watts and the latest graphics card 70-80 watts. It would be wise though to upgrade to a bigger one next time. But can you see what the temperature of the CPU is at 100% load? |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Re: Shutting Down Yeah... i concur with prior comments about Temperature. The drive disc for your m\b should have a prog that lets u c what the temp is of your com. Failing that there r utilities avail from SIS website or com mags enabling you to monitor temps. Last option is to start your com and goto bios settings and watch the temp setts and fan speeds. Rule of thumb is if your com gets to 70deg Cel, then it is running too hot. You will need to get a new cpu heatsink fan for around AUS$10-20.00. GL M8 |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Uh, I thought you could only monitor temperature using those programs is you have a chipset/mobo with a thermometer built in? |

Re: Shutting Down Issue Except he might NEVER come back....Meh, my MOBO doesn't have thermometer support as far as I know..then again it's Compaq and chop full of proprietary hardware (and no overclocking :( ).... |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Thanks alot for yuor help guys. You guys are a godsend.ERm Uber General, the sensor thing only shows me the RPM of my fan, which is at around 3814 to 3900. |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Ok, what version are your sound and graphics card drivers? People say all the time they have the latest drivers, but, for example, last week someone said they had the latest... I asked what drivers, he insisted in telling me the latest. Finally, I told him I'm not going to help him if he doesn't tell me his graphics card drivers. BTW he has an ATI Radeon. He tells me Catalyst 3.0, which was released 01/10/2003. I just shook my head. So let us know. |
Re: Shutting Down Issue I have Catalyst 3.7.I don't wanna install 3.8 and .9 cos Call of Duty keeps crashing with them. But is it with an overheating issue? Or Shortage of power. |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Well its hard to tell if it is an overheating problem since you can't even see how hot the CPU is getting. You could order a cheap thermometer for your CPU and check it out. It's unlikely that it is the PSU. You don't have a top-notch graphics card, a high fsb cpu, or a fast turning hard drive. Try updating it to the new 3.9s and try to play Warcraft III, since COD doesn't seem to be working for you. Even though Call of Duty works perfectly for me, and I'm running the new 3.9s. Also, have you updated the drivers for your integrated sound through Windows Update? |
Re: Shutting Down Issue Are you absoloutley sure it's shutting down and not just hibernating? Do you get the message "Windows is Shutting Down" or is it just random, and you see a horrid black screen? |
