New DSL: Tweaks? Hello, We finally got our Earthlink DSL, and its up and running. The only problem is, I can't seem to go over 20-25k a second. We have a 1.8/128 modem service so this should not be the case. I've tried the various tweaks to my RWIN, MaxMTU and all those, but none seem to do anything, unless I'm applying them wrong. I have PC Accelerator and Download Acccelerator (DAP). Any ideas? Thanks |
Goto www.j-bo.com and then to the download section and download iSpeed. http://www.veforums.com/wink.gif Set your MTU to 1500 and your RWIN to 16380. http://www.veforums.com/wink.gif You should get a good boost in performance that way. http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif ------------------ Athlon @1600 Epox 8kta3 1 Gig of Micron PC133 CAS2 Nvidia GeForce 3 SB Live! 5.1 DUAL 30gigATA/100's in RAID 0 Promise 66MHz FastTrak100TX2 16x Toshiba DVD Drive Lite On 12x10x32 Burner w/BURN-Proof DTT 2200 Digitals LinkSys LNE 10/100/200 PCI NIC w/ LinkSys 5 port Switch Cisco 677 DSL Router1.5Mbps/288Kbps 21" KDS .24 click here to view--->More about my System---j-bo.com <---Visit my site and forum 6532 3DMarks2001 Former 3Dfiles Member |
your first problem is earth link if u read their license agreement u are only gaurenteed 64kbits thats roughly 8k on a adsl line. the buisness one is 90 percent gaurteed speed. the second part of your problem is the fact that u called it a modem quote here and listen to it EXACTLY "IF u got a MODEM send it back thats not what u want. u want a dsl router or bridge." u also wanna make sure u installed your filters if the dsl isnt on a dedicated line ------------------ ok my stuff athlon 1.1gig water cooled couple of 20 gig drives tyan trinity board 512 133 viking and generic ram 3dfx 5500(soon 2 b water cooled) a 3com nic 20 dollar yamaha audio canopus dvraptor my system is not oc'ed, just quiet |
I work in tech support for this very thing- go to www.speedguide.net, and they have registry tweaks that will usually up your speed. Theres the manual walkthru if youre comfortable doing it yourself, or theres the autorun tool if youre not, although you'll generally get better results doing it manually. It changes your mtu settings, and a couple other tweaks. As far as earthlink- if they told you those speeds were what you were paying for, then thats what you should be getting. So if you have a speed issue, call them. Run some ftp speed tests, web based, and see what you get. Problem is, getting it from Elink, you still need a phone line to run it across. So they 'rent' the lines from a telcom provider, and they in turn do the line support. So you'll need to call elink, but if its a line issue, they'll probably have to go the extra step to send out a tech from whoever your local service provider is. Ask them specifically to check for bridge taps or load coils on your line, as those can impede speed as well. Although I dont work FOR elink, I have to deal w them daily. Their tech support leaves alot to be desired, but overall theyre not a bad isp. Good luck. *Almost forgot- what type of modem do they have you using? And what PPPOE client? Just curious. Give me whatever info you can. And contrary to what he stated above, a dsl 'modem' will work fine with your connection. That has very little to do, if anything, with your speed. ok soze again u obviously dont understand what i mean A modem is an analagous device so u are dumb as rocks cuz dsl's are digital u know MOdulateDEModulate a dsl unit should be a bridge or a router if u do have pppoe dump earthlink u want a static address or direct dhcp ------------------ ok my stuff athlon 1.1gig water cooled couple of 20 gig drives tyan trinity board 512 133 viking and generic ram 3dfx 5500(soon 2 b water cooled) a 3com nic 20 dollar yamaha audio canopus dvraptor my system is not oc'ed, just quiet |
Soze, I have the WinPoet client and all my filters hooked up. Just recently I got a steady 47k so I'm hoping it's just Earthlink's problem for the moment. They still haven't delivered the rest of our network sattelites, so I'll wait and see. I have tried most of the speedguide tweaks, and my RWIN is 22000 I believe. Thanks for all the replies so far. How you can possibly talk sh*t about my lack of knowledge with your lack of the english language is pretty damn amusing. An EXTERNAL dsl modem works FINE- it has NOTHING TO DO with his speed. Winpoet is a pppoe client. DSL works fine with this client. You do NOT need a router or bridge to get proper speeds with this service. If you'd like to argue this point say, with a provider, by all means call one. They'll basically reiterate the fact that youre a total jerk who doesnt know your ass from your elbow yet feels the need to try and bash people who try and help others. I dont post advice on here often because I'm not a self proclaimed expert. However, I DO THIS FOR A LIVING- so suck it up and go flame somewhere else. A static ip address isnt going to affect your speed much either, although its helpful for webhosting and other various things. Email me scott_p1@yahoo.com and I'll get you to our ftp test site, that'll give you a better idea of where youre at and where you need to focus. I'm trying to assist you, so basically, if you'd like some help, I'd be more than happy to. That or you can listen to that bottomless well of knowledge listed above, but good luck trying to decipher what he says http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif [This message has been edited by KeyserSoze (edited August 27, 2001).] |
KeyserSoze... Dont feed the trolls. you know what I mean.. |
Noted. I'm not going that route http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif At the same time, I'm not about to sit here and take it. I should ignore it, and in reality, I am, because I dont give it a second thought, I just consider the source, but if you'll notice, 80% of that post was to the individual looking for information. Thats all. |
