Performance Problem Plz Help!

Ok heres the deal. When i first got my rig (see: below) it was blazing fast, I could get into a game in no time, whether it be over the internet or single. It has slowed down a lot over just a few months and I can't see why. I used to be able to start say counter-strike in like 10 seconds and be playing, now it takes almost a minute just to load. This shouldnt happen on this comp.

I defrag regularly, scandisk, virus scan, I have tried many tweak programs for my cable and computer, if you could assist me in this to try and find the prob and fix it, or need more info plz reply or icq: 38577773 thx.

First, format c:, then reinstall Windows.

damn... that's what they all say http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

if this were *my* computer that would be simple, but since it isnt its gonna be hard to convince the ol' 'rents to let me rape the whole comp just to get it back to good speed http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

hell they dont care they only use it for keeping books and my sis would cry when i whipe out her stupid dogz game... argh!

Find an experience user (no, a p0\/\/3r G4m3r will not do) and ask him to reformat your system and reinstall all your old files and programs.

It should take a day or two but most experienced users (who are still on 9x, 2k seems not to need the monthly reformat) will be used to it and can keep all your files and usually make sure all your software is working too (in the same state you left it, expect usually faster and without that annoying bug that crept in a month after you installed it).

(disclaimer: backup as it won't be me doing this and others, even me myself, could make mistakes or do something wrong from inexperience or stupidity and loosing it all is very bad)

And yes, a reformat is the price you pay for using the fastest Windows OS (9x) while others suffer 2k (gladly)

Delete the file "custom.hpk" in your valve, CS, DOD and any other Half-Life mod folders.

This stores other player's spray images. If this file gets much bigger than 1.5 Mb it will seriously slow down the amount of time it takes to start an online game.

You need to do this every few months.

And guys, it's pretty reckless to just glibbly recommend a format to someone without first trying to address his problem.

A format is a last resort solution.
