Voodoo3 vs. GeForce DDR: The Truth

Hey, I've noticed this link in 3dchipset's news today:
http://www.rizenet.com/articles/voodoo3_vs_geforce.htm

I'm not saying I agree or disagree but it's kind of interesting. What do you think?

FlyingPenguin December 26th, 2000 09:54 PM

He's on crack or bought a crummy Leaktech card, or used the manufacturer's drivers, or all three.

Those two cards are a generation apart.

I upgraded from a V3 to an Asus Geforce1 DDR and it not just a LITTLE faster but a LOT faster than a V3. I've had ZERO problems with it, but I don't play anything but first person shooters (Q3, Q2, HL, NOLF, SoF, SS2).

Bottom line is I went from 63 to 101 fps in Q3 - that's over 35% improvement. I can play at higher resolutions with the same fps I had before.

Moreover, I don't get smoke lag in CS anymore, and that's worth it right there since it's practically all I play online (play CS for a while and you can tell who owns a V3 by the way they complain about "lag bombs").

He may have also used the manufacturer's drivers which are crap - I saw a 25% improvement in Q3 going to the NVidia Reference Detonator drivers - never use manufacturer's driver on a Geforce.

If he paid $300 he got a Deluxe version like I did with all the bells and whistles like TV in and out (I paid about $300 for mine and don't regret it - I need the TV in and out for work I do).

Well he's got some interesting points to make if you are using old software. I'm sure I have some old games that only support Glide (F22 for one thing).

As for the looks dept, can't say I agree with him. I think the GeForce MX I have looks better in 16 bit. Being fair I never use it in 32 bit mode as I don't think the improvement is that big.

Maybe he was comparing them on a ****e monitor. Personally I'm using a CTX960 which uses a lovely Sony 19" flat CRT screen.

Ref compatibility, as per FP I've had no problems.

The drivers from Creative also appear to have no significant difference to the reference drivers from NVidea. I can see myself upgrading if Creative don't keep up with new advances, but right now they seem to offer very similar performance.

BTW: are manufactors drivers really crap FlyingPenguin? I got a Geforce1 DDR and it seems not to work with the reference drivers...Most people say that there is a performance increase with reference, but these drivers don't work for me...Someone know a fix?

FlyingPenguin December 27th, 2000 09:05 PM

What brand and model card? If it's not a reference design then the reference drivers may not work. Also, NEVER use leaked (beta) drivers - use the latest official drivers only, which right now are 6.31 I believe.

In general, the reference drivers work much better. I have an Asus V6800 Geforce1 DDR. In Q3 using the Asus drivers I got 71 fps - using the reference drivers I got 103. Guess which drivers I use.

Granted this was 4 months ago and Asus' latest drivers are much closer in performance to NVidia's, but in general the Det drivers are a better choice unless you need some specific feature on the card that's not supported by them.

I got the same card as you. It somehow doesn't work properly with the reference...I have uninstalled the previous drivers, installed the 631 drivers, but when I let Win98SE search for the drivers, it refers back to my previous Asus 533a drivers...Ok, but when I run an application, like a game, it will lockup or there is a mojor performance decrease...

Have you installed the Asus drivers before, and what have you done more than just uninstall the drivers in the software control pannel..?

hmmm...

I'm using 6.31 and they're fine.

Don't allow Windows to search for the drivers, it ALWAYS installs the one you last used. Instead select "Show me all compatible drivers for this device and let me choose" in the driver installation wizard, then click on the "Have Disk" button, then browse to the folder where you have the 6.31 drivers unzipped.

This will force Windows to use the proper driver. Check the version in Device Manager afterwards to make sure.

What the hell?

Three letters DDR.

By the way IDOLATOR is your Geforce a 256 DDR or a 32 bit.
Cause I got the 32bit DDR ASUS GEFORCE 1 V6800 series, the exact one as Fly Penguine. And I'm having the same flavours as what he's getting from his Geforce and drivers.
and I'm not having any drama.

What you should look at is the card itself to double check man. Actually I'm not sure if it actually says ASUS 256 on it or not. another way to find out is to boot your machine and look for the Logo at the start that states what your cards is.

eh..."NVIDIA's Detonator 3 (D3) instantly increases the processing power of the NVIDIA-based GeForce, GeForce2, Quadro and Quadro2 family of graphic accelerators by up to 50%."

Quoting NVIDIA driver's site.

V3's are rooted compared to the Geforce, cause my friend has that card and he's a Graphics Card expert and knows that Geforce is a better vcard.

Everyone knows that !

ok.

I have installed the drivers they way you adviced me. Still doesn't work properly. 2D Performance is great, but 3D is very poor or doesn't work at all.

For example: I can't have these drivers work for a game like Sacrifice.

I have reinstalled my Asus drivers [533a] again. But I really want to take advantage of the performance increase of the detonatordrivers..

Anyone got also problems running detonator drivers, or have some tips, feel free to post. [help]

Thank you
