problems with games freezing
 

this is what I have:

AMD 1Ghz
ASUS Av7
256MB PC133
Prophet II GTS Pro
Creative Labs Encore CD/DVD
SB Live! Plat. 5.1
MS natural keyboard (with the 2 USB slots on the back)
MS Intellimouse explorer

Nothing is overclocked, not using any USB(cant get any of it to work, but that can wait for another post) so far, everything is working fine (just got all this recently) except for one thing:after 10-60 minutes of playing any game, the keyboard and mouse stop responding...at first I thought it was locking up, but then durring unreal Tournament I got to sit and watch people trample me...anyone have any ideas?

What OS?

This happen in all games or just UT?

How about the regular desktop?

Since you have an Athlon motherboard, make sure you have the latest motherboard drivers (might be why the USB is not working). Go to the motherboard manufacturer's web site and get them.

While you're at it, check for an updated flash BIOS.

well, im running Windows 98 SE and it looks like it's happening when I play any game. I downloaded the upgrade for my mobo, but I have no idea how to install the damn thing, and the BIOS upgrade i just cant find. Thanks for being so helpful, FP http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

Ive tried an Asus A7V and now an Abit KT7a.
Ive tried everything i can think of

There should be instructions on their website on how to install the Flash BIOS update - it varies with different mobos.

If you downloaded updated drivers for your mobo, there should be an included readme file explaining how to install them. Usually you go to Device manager, click on Update driver in the device's properties, and let the wizard browse for the dirvers in whatever folder you unzipped them in.

If you're having USB issues, try disabling the USB in the BIOS menu - that may be causing problems.

Another possibility is you may have a PCI IRQ channel sharing problem (this is NOT the same as an IRQ conflict).

This problem is very common with NICs, some PCI sound cards (the SBLive in particular) and SCSI controller cards. These cards do NOT like to share a PCI IRQ channel I explain the problem in detail here with a fix: http://voodooextreme.com/flypenguin/glfaq5.htm#5_9

Since more than one card could be causing the problem, you'll be chasing your tail unless you troubleshoot it one card at a time.

Make a note of which slot each card is currently installed in right now. Pull ALL your PCI cards except the video card and boot up. Make sure the system is working okay. If the problem consistently happens when playing a game, run that game now and make sure it's okay (most games will run just fine without a sound card installed by-the-way).

If the system seems stable shut down and install ONE CARD AT A TIME. Start with the sound card. Make sure that the sound card does NOT share an IRQ with any other device. If it does, or the system acts up, move the card to a different slot until it's resolved.

Repeat this process with all the PCI cards starting with NIC card next if there is one.
