Problems with my voodoo5 AGP

3 days ago I purchased a voodoo5 5500 AGP. When I opened the box I found that my card did NOT come with the v5 quick install cd =(. What I did next is go to 3dfx.com and download the v5 drivers version 1.04. I installed these and it worked as far as I could tell. The problem begain when I installed Unreal Tournament. When I tried to get into the game the screen went crazy into a bunch of white and black lines and the computer did not recover. After 1 and a half days of trouble shooting I found out that my v5 was sharing an interrupt with my ethernet card. I removed the ethernet card and it WORKED!

Here is my current problem. After the card started working I upgraded my computer from win98 1st edition to win98 2nd edition. My v5 card no longer works and the blinking screen with black and white lines is back. I have installed multiple games and I always get the same black and white blinking screen. I tried reinstalling the drivers also. My computer is a Dell, 400 mghz pentium 2, v5 AGP, win98 2nd edition, if u need any other info just ask.

I think that you have found your problem with the IRQ sharing. Look at the IRQ for your card there and look for other devices such as sound cards, NICs, or SCSI adapters that might not like to share the same IRQ as your V5. Most times you will be able to fix this problem by re-arranging your cards in different slots to move the cards that "don't play well with others" to a PCI slot where they don't have to share an IRQ.

There are a few possible problems here...

- The IRQ/Resource sharing conflict could certainly still be the culprit. Try this : remove any PCI cards in your system so that the only thing in there is your AGP video card (and perhaps any ISA cards you may have). Boot the system and play awhile - if none of your previous issues arise (strange lines and such) then most likely one of your PCI cards is conflicting with the Voodoo card (sharing an IRQ, etc). You now need to do the "card shuffle" - install the your PCI cards one by one - boot the system each time and see if the glitches appear. You may need to move the cards around quite a bit till they each find their "sweet spot". I generally try to keep the PCI slot next to my AGP card empty - my Voodoo 5500 does not like sharing resources w/ my NIC or my MX300 soundcard.

- The 2nd possibility is that you still have driver tracers of your old video card in there; since you had Win98 and then went to Win98SE, I assume you just downloaded the various updates and did not do a "fresh install" on a formatted drive. Look in the other forum topic by apacide (title is "updating drivers" or something to that effect) to see how you can take some steps to remove as much of the old drivers as possible.
