I bought this device today for $120 and I am really starting to regret it. First off the videos are definitely not HD. It actually almost looks like I set a camera in front of my monitor and filmed my game footage. Second, I cannot seem to figure out how to record audio through HDMI and instructions are no where to be found. If anyone knows, that would be awesome. Lastly, there's no hotkeys! I have to minimize the game each time to stop/start recording. Unless I want to record a few hours of one single video.
Can anyone who owns this or has used it recommend settings to try?
**I've only tried this for filming gameplay on PC, not Xbox or PS3, yet.
Take a screenshot or picture of the settings and I'll take a look. I personally don't have one, but having used so many capture programs, I don't think they would make all of the settings so hilariously different.

I run a Hauppage HD-PVR 1st Gen on my 360, and when I first installed the recording software for it, I ran into two issues. 1...Even though 720p was selected, it was recording in 480 and only grabbing the top left corner of my videos. 2...I was not able to customize bit rate and shit like that. I actually had to contact Hauppage support and get them to build me a custom installer for the software.
My first guess would be to look at your bitrates and what not, if there is an option to compress it, and your resolution settings. If you have already, well, I'm afraid I am of no help to you. Haha.

That does look pretty awful. You can't even customize the bitrate? You can't enable advanced options or something?
Not that I can find. You'd think that since this is gaming specific there would be more settings or at the very least, hotkeys! Pretty pathetic when free programs give more options than a $120 item.
Try using Dxtory with the capture card, and ignore all of that nonsense. That's the only thing I can really suggest having seen absolutely nothing good about their software.
Most external capture sources can be broadcast through 3rd party programs, which is often what live streamers do. They'll buy a capture card, and just use OBS, or Xsplit, whatever they're comfortable with using.

I've used Dxtroy a lot but my videos for Chivalry, which is the game I want to film, end up being really choppy. Not to mention it knocks a good chunk of frames off my gameplay.
So are you saying I can use a 3rd party program, like Xsplit, with my capture device?
Yes, but xsplit is a live capture program, I've never actually used it to capture videos when they aren't live. I'm assuming that you can do it, but I'm not sure how affected your framerate will be.
OBS is currently a good free alternative to Xsplit, and provides the same benefits as a premium Xsplit license.
Hmm I'll look into using a 3rd party program once I'm done work. Thanks for your replies. I'll probably end up returning the stupid thing. Might purchase a different one. Maybe the Hauppauge PVR 2 Gaming Edition. Anyone know if it's any good, or a recommendation?
