Default Phone home

I need a new cell phone, the old cell phone I have now is starting to annoy me - half of the screen is broken and the battery is getting bad.

I don't need lots of features (I only use such phones with prepaid cards, internet usage would be restricted to areas with WLAN access), the following would be nice though:
-good price/performance
-very good battery
-compact size, so that it is easy to transport, screen shouldn't cause issues when typing though

Are you after a cheap smartphone, or a regular phone with a few extras? If the former, I'd say the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 would be a decent bet. It's not overly expensive, it's very small, the touchscreen is supposed to be fairly responsive, and because it's not very powerful hardware wise it should get decent battery life, so far as smartphones go. And it's got all the basics covered with wifi, e-mail and Internet browsing, along with a rudimentary camera for those emergency snaps.

Since I'm an Apple fan I'm going to suggest iPhone 5, but I'm sure most of you lot would disagree on the price/performance criteria and perhaps even battery life.

If the above isn't really an option, I'd go for the Samsung Galaxy as well.

Don't, ever, get a Blackberry. You'll regret it.

I'm an Apple fan too, I'm writing this very post on an iPhone in fact, but I think an iPhone would be overkill for his needs, in terms of both price and performance. Unless he managed to find one incredibly cheap somewhere... But then it's probably be one of the older ones, which always had shockingly low battery lives.

I suppose one way to go would be to get a cheap and cheerful mobile phone like a Nokia 500, with zero features but enormous battery life, and then pick up something like an iPod Touch for apps, music, a camera, and wifi web browsing.

I'll join in with the 'don't ever get a Blackberry' warning though.

I would also say the samsung Galaxy Mini is a cheap but very functional phone. I would look at the Galaxy Ace 2 as well. It is more expensive but you get what you pay for tbh.

Mr Matt and Graeme recommending a Apple product on here ? are you 2 wanting a ban ?

The Galaxy Mini 2 looks good. I bought a Galaxy Gio as present for a friend last year, that one was very similar. Too bad that there don't seem to be any newer phones in this price range, at least from Samsung (I like their designs). Something like a Galaxy Mini 2 with 2000mAh battery.

Maybe I'll just have to dish out more to get a decent phone. The Galaxy Mini 3 looks interesting as well.

Even though the Mini 2 only has an 800~mAh battery, because it's not an especially powerful phone you should be able to get a couple of days light use out of it I'd wager. But I admit, it's the weakest part of the proposition, and if you use it a lot it'll probably show.

If I'm not mistaken, it has a removable battery. If that's the case, you might try looking into what aftermarket batteries are available for it, if any.

Otherwise, yeah, you might have to spend a little more. Unfortunately the more expensive phones tend to be more powerful, so whether you'll get any real gains out of the extra battery capacity, I don't know. Best bet would be to check out the user feedback on the models you're interested and see how much use they get out of them before needing a charge.

If you want something cheap, you could always go with a Samsung Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Fit or one of the oder Galaxies? Love my Galaxy S2, best gadget i have ever bought!

My only concern with the Galaxy s2 is that I get the impression that portability is paramount to Mr. Fancypants (correct me if I'm wrong, of course). And when you're headed to the pub on a sunny summer Sunday afternoon (alliteration failure) a Galaxy S is quite a large proposition to fit in your jeans pockets.

If he disagrees, though, and thinks that such a device would be of a reasonable size, I'd definitely recommend one as well. You can get the S2 pretty cheaply these days; Samsung phones rarely hold their value as well as Apple phones, after all!

That's right. Tempting fate with facts.
