Get any good toys in the mail lately?

Most of the stuff is review samples but I did have to shell out as assload for that 3930K and ram which isn't pictured(diablo mouse and headset aren't pictured). Post if you guys have got anything good as of late.

I got my replacement Asus GTX 580 DirectCU II a couple weeks ago, and I'm happy to say it's been performing beautifully. I also got a 16GB micro SD card for my Android phone.

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

The SRW-S1 is no doubt better than MS' Wireless Speedwheel, but I have a hard time buying the logic of their making the steering lock up to 360 degree unless you have arms like Fantastic Four's Mr Fantastic. I can see maybe up to 240 degrees, but 360 on a hand held is unrealistic.

Seems a bit cluttered with features that would only be usable in a few games too. Had they designed it more streamlined it would also have been in a more sensible price range, like in between that of game pads and wheel/pedal sets vs costing more than some entry level wheel/pedal sets.

IMO more features the better.

This is more aimed at people who cant fit a wheel and pedals combo on their desk. If I could fit one, I would own one but I cant so something like this is great for me.

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

Yeah that is true, some desk setups just don't allow for the big clamp on wheels, and then there's the portability element. I also like that it has paddle shifters vs having to use crappy pad type buttons. I even like that it's wired vs wireless. I'd rather deal with the cord and get zero lag and not have to feed it batteries.

No rumble though, I'd expect a controller in that price range to have at least that. Even though I've never been a big fan of it, subtle amounts of FF CAN help indicate loss of traction, esp in cockpit view where you can't actually SEE how much sliding you're doing.

So for me it's mainly price, but since it's new there may be a price drop once more vendors carry it. I have to wonder how many will though. It could end up being a far more obscure item than the Speed Wheel.

We'll see how it is when I review it. I'm sure that I'll be sad to sell it when I finish the review though. Just hoping that it doesn't rock my socks so I dont have to convince myself to keep it =/

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

If I got one as a free review sample, I'd definitely keep vs sell it, barring something unacceptable like glitching software, crap game support, etc. Have fun trying to twist your arms 360 degrees with you hands in a fixed position. LOL

If I didn't have to shell out the cash to buy the 3930K I would keep the wheel but as-is my bank account needs some help.

Edit:

Andddd the wheel is cool as hell.

Hurts your forearms after playing for awhile but its not too bad.

I would if I had the money for it. :/ As it is, I can't even get a decent joystick for BF3, which makes flying sort of inefficient.

Recently upgraded my rad this this... Still lazy about mounting it though.

Three 600RPM fans, and nothing in my rig goes above 55°C any more. :)

I also "upgraded" my PSU from a 1200W Thoughpower to a Silent Pro M700. My electricity bill is lower, and I'll actually make a profit, once I get this other PSU sold. Also: Sweet jesus, the silence! I honestly had no clue just how bloody loud my old PSU was. I can barely hear this thing. Loudest thing in my rig are the four hard drives now. (Thinking about building an i3 server for those)

Stop buying $500 gtx580's and you'd have money for a joystick :p

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

PFFT. I can live without the joystick, I can't live with subpar looking graphics!

Oh, I got that 580 btw, haven't had time to put it in and try it out due to working all weekend. Probably won't have time with midterms coming up, so maybe at the end of the week.

Also got a Corsair H60, got that installed and haven't had any problems with it so far. Quiet and efficient, so far cooling better than my CM H212+.

Hmm, lately, a while ago I got two extra 120mm fans (one in purple, one in red) to put in the side of Berserker, looks pretty cool (no pics though, I'm horrible with them). otherwise things on the tech ordering front have been slow lately, need the moneys first!

Supa December 5th, 2011 01:29 PM

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

Looks like I might end up sending my 580 back, my motherboard is being dumb, and I don't know if it's going to be worth it to RMA it and get another one in favor of just getting a new motherboard/processor.

Sort of sad. I wake up this morning expecting things to be working, instead my motherboard decides to be a bitch and only have one RAM slot work.

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

if you dont want the dead mobo I'll take it :D
VRM zombify is calling its name (take vrm section from dead gtx480 and solder to board )

Supa December 5th, 2011 03:21 PM

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

I RMA'd it this morning (fastest return ever, out of the case within seconds, repackaged, and taken to UPS within an hour of giving up). I'll probably sell it, so I can just get a new motherboard and processor.

I wasn't looking forward to having to get a new motherboard and processor, but when life shits on you, you really have no choice.

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

Regarding joysticks I got a Saitek X52 Pro awhile ago. Very nice but a pain to set up.

Can't use it in BF3 however because DICE has the dead-zone all screwed up with no way to fix it despite claiming you could adjust it with the latest patch.

Anyone who says that the D14 is "large" needs to win an award for understatement of the year.

Spoiler tags dude, spoiler tags. =p

Didn't realise they'd made a specific one for failsocket... I mean 2011.

It just came out so that must be why you haven't heard anything.
I also got first crack as far as I can tell for the review of it.

UPS man also just showed up with this bad boy

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

Why would you get an SF SSD? Much better off with an M4 or an Octane or something.

Having said that, I think Corsair in particular (not sure about others) have managed to iron out a lot of the bugs.

Maybe because I got it for free?

Well that's as good as reason as any...

Just got the new motherboard and got everything installed. Kind of annoyed that I have to go through the long process of installing Windows Vista, upgrading to SP1, then updating to Windows 7, but it'll be worth it.

Um, you know you can clean install from an upgrade DVD, right? (Google, easy find)

Don't enter the license key while you're installing; install it without a key, and then activate via phone any time within the 30 day grace period.

Supa December 14th, 2011 05:37 PM

Re: Get any good toys in the mail lately?

Yeah, I got it activated last night. Silly automated activation assistant. "How many times have you activated this key?"

"... Once? :X"

Also I just got my new modem this evening after work. Got it activated and working, and I'm happy to say all of my connection issues were caused by that old modem. I had forgotten how long I Had it. (6 years, for those wondering)

Dropped my connection randomly, and my speed had been degraded to something like 8mbps instead of the normal 25mbps I pay for.

I just always say "zero" and it's let me install it four times in a row now. =p

I'm on my 9th different motherboard on this windows install.
0 is the key :)
