Default Web Page Pixel Dimensions

So one of my buddies has "hired" me to create some web page designs for him. No problem. However I am having some trouble finding out what that "standard" web page dimensions are. Are there any rules to this, or do they vary? I'd hate to have to create some designs and then do them over again...although that is probably involved with creative design. xD

Any help would be appreciated.

You could install that Firefox plugin to measure pixels and go to some popular sites. Or you could just use relative values instead of absolute values.

As Fancypants suggested, you could use a fluid width instead of a fixed one, if you're worried about having the wrong dimensions. Fluid means the page will adjust it's width as you resize your browser's window (for instance, it remains on 60% width regardless of the dimension of your browser's window, or the resolution of your monitor).

But if you prefer not to, the most used widths are 760px, 980px, 1060px and 1280px. The height is usually set to auto.

Using relative values can get messy, depending on how you're doing your CSS. I usually stick with absolutes. Most sites are around the 950-980 mark. This fits well in the 1024 monitor bracket leaving room for scrollbars and window borders, etc.
