3dfx Voodoo-1 and DirectX-8

When I obtain a DirectX-8 interface, DirectX will not reckognize my Voodoo-1 graphics board as HW-accelerated. It can enumerate correctly the cards installed on my system ("ELSA Winner Trio 64" and "3dfx Voodoo"), it doens't let me create a HAL-Device, only a reference device. All the example programs of the DirectX-8 SDK also report "no HW acceleration available"

However if I obtain a DirectX-7 interface, I can successfully create a HAL-Device for the 3dfx card. Also the "DxDiag" program correctly shows the 2 installed display adapters and says "HW-acceleration is available" for adapter #2.

...?

Is anyone else having the same problem, or successfully using DirectX-8 together with 3dfx Voodoo-1?

The Voodoo1 does not support Dx8 at all. It barely supports Dx7.

Few games use true Dx8 features yet so even if a game says it needs Dx8, it probably does't. Giants claims to require Dx8 but runs fine under Dx7 for example.

Umm, it's REALLY long past time for a new card. Consider a GeforceMX for around $90
