I've decided.... Going to pick the computer tommrow morning and ive decided Buy the Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz Quad-Core Unlocked CPU at TigerDirect.ca Buy the MSI P67A-GD65 B3 Intel P67 LGA1155 Motherboard at TigerDirect.ca Buy the Corsair CMP8GX3M4A1600C8 Dominator 8GB DDR3 RAM at TigerDirect.ca Buy the Corsair CWCH50-1 Hydro H50 CPU Liquid Cooler at TigerDirect.ca or this... cooler... whats better? Buy the Corsair CAFA70 A70 Air Series CPU Cooler at TigerDirect.ca I'd like to give speical thanks to Kow, Omen and everyone who spent part of there lives on my "What to do" thread. |
Re: I've decided.... You certainly found some good prices there. Those are killer deals on both coolers. At first I was going to ask why not the 2600k, then I saw their price on it was a whopping $100 more. At that price I would just go with the A70 and bank the $35 for something else. The A70 can come very close to the best air coolers on the market. It's a steel at that price. |
Re: I've decided.... Canada computers has the cpu for 10 dollars less but they dont have the motherboard i want. As for the 2600K too much money its not in my budget. I'll use this thread as a refrence to show the employers at tigerdirect exactly what i want. I want the Cosair domatior GT but that thing is an arm and a leg. but the ram i got there is good right? |
Re: I've decided.... Yeah Corsair Dominator is pretty good stuff. Only reason I went with Kingston is they work harder on XMP profiles to make sure they work with any system. It's about the only RAM you really don't have to worry about being plug n play at it's rated frequency. Corsair Dominator is compatibility tested for by a lot of MB manufacturers though. That doesn't mean it's always fuss free on the listed MBs though. QVLs are very much hype to sell product really. I've heard stories of Corsair RAM, including Dominator, being very finicky in some situations. On the CPU, hate to break it to you but if you compare all the best prices Can vendors have on it, TigerDirect.ca comes in at the bottom of the list. Re: I've decided.... I guess i can pick up the cpu at canada computers and buy the rest of the stuff at tigerdirect. |
Re: I've decided.... Well sure you can, and doing so sends a message to certain vendors that some of their prices aren't so competitive. |
Re: I've decided.... might want to see if you can swing the extra $50 or so and get the 2600k |
Re: I've decided.... Ya but what about the game-s, ya gotta get a killer free game or two. ! When you talk to them, MAKE SURE YOU ASK !!!, they might send a game, otherwise how else can you blab nice things , hint hint.... |
Re: I've decided.... Get this G.Skill instead & put the rest towards the 2600k Also, I have the A70 & it is a great cooling beast, especially for that price. I got mine at launch & payed more, but it was worth every penny. |
Re: I've decided.... G.SKILL may be cheap, but how is it for reliability? I've heard you get what you pay for, and I personally suspect one of my G.SKILL sticks may be bad. |
Re: I've decided.... ram from any company is pretty much the same for reliability. the PCB for almost all companies is brainpower, and the IC is made by samsung, hynix, micron, powerchip, or Elpida( a couple other companies for servers but not really used in consumer-level stuff ) . The only differences are in spd profiles and that only has to do with compatibility( which can easily be fixed by a mobo bios update) But in terms of one company having ram last longer than another, thats simply untrue. |
Re: I've decided.... The 2600k is at least $100 more, not $50 more. I've checked a few sets of bench comparisons and quite frankly am not convinced the 2600k is worth nearly 50% more for the slight performance increase. Yes it has more cache and HT and a slight clock increase, but in games, esp with OCing factored in, there's not enough difference to warrant paying that much more. AnandTech even showed the 2500k slightly outperforming the 2600k in Crysis Warhead. |
Re: I've decided.... RAM doesn't really to much tbh. Any sort of gaming RAM will be fine. Going from 1333MHz CAS 9 RAM to 2000MHz CAS9 will give you maybe an extra one frame in games. The difference shows up in synthetic memory benchmarks alright, but who gives a crap? On the subject of coolers - they're both very good. The A70 is probably slightly louder than the H50 though. If you were to keep your processor at a given temp with both, odds are the H50 would make less noise doing it. That's the reason I picked a H50 over a Venemous X or NH-D14 originally. |

Re: I've decided.... my mom says that a computer dealer can get parts cheaper but apperantly shes wrong. |
Re: I've decided.... She may or may not be. Regardless though, said dealer isn't going to sell them at the price he buys them. |

Re: I've decided.... In my limited experience, it's usually more expensive at small computer shops because they don't buy and sell in the huge bulk that big stores do, and they don't have the advantage of minimal cost that online dealers do. |

Re: I've decided.... I've got the computer in my car and im going to build it and heres the deal I got a Core i52500k, 8 gigs of corsair dominator GT, a gigabyte P467 chipset and now im going to put it together so cheers... and thanks everyone for suggesting me to get a i5. |
Re: I've decided.... Should be fun. |

Out of curiosity and a desire to run matched fans, I put my two rear case fans on the H50, which are 200RPM slower and around 8 CFM less airflow than the stock H50 fans. Wouldn't you know it I get roughly the same results as the stock fans. That tells me there is far more at play than mere RPM and CFM when it comes to rad fans. You have to factor in static pressure and concentration of airflow, not just volume of airlfow. If I ever see them at a killer price, I may eventually try a couple of Silverstone's air channeling fans. Supposedly they really do direct the airflow more efficiently, and they're pretty low noise too. Newegg.com - SILVERSTONE AP121 120mm Case Fan That being said, I think what is more likely going on here is the fact that a small sealed WC unit like this can only perform so well regardless of fans used and reaches a saturation point at a certain temp. After seeing the minimal temp differences on benches of the H70, I'm also doubting it's smaller pump/WC block assembly is any more capable than the H50's. It's likely just more efficient for it's size producing the same pressure/cooling in a smaller package. I'm sure the real reason the H70 is slightly better at cooling overall is due merely to the thicker rad, which is no doubt why they had to make the pump/block unit smaller, to have room to install the inner fan. |
Re: I've decided.... Get a couple of 38mm fans and you'll be set. Panaflo's are $4.25 at crazypc atm. Might want to pick up a couple of them |
Re: I've decided.... Quote:

Re: I've decided.... Everything is 50% off at checkout. Even a single panaflo would beat out two 25mm fans. Its all about static pressure, and those rads need high static pressure fans. As far as being loud, the medium speed one isn't loud at all. I've got one and I was kind of disapointed since I thought it would be louder going full blast. |
Re: I've decided.... CFM means pretty much nothing when you're talking about rad fans. It's all about static pressure. I was using NF-P12s, which have, I think, 1.31mm static pressure. I then switched to Akasa Apaches, which have basically the same specs, except 2.64mm static pressure. Saw a 3* idle drop, and 8* load. |
Re: I've decided.... Funny that the stock H50/70 fans are actually MADE by Akaska. Is there ANY site that sells fans where they list static pressure specs? |
Re: I've decided.... doubt it. only delta and a couple other server-level companies even test for it |
Re: I've decided.... Well I refuse to go high static if it means high noise (even over 30db), and high efficiency like the NF-P12s means high price (not to mention FUGLY!). Guess I'll wait until I get a GPU that warrants a higher OC on the CPU. Until then I'm good with it the way it is. Truth is I'm starting to recall how much I hate radiators after seeing some minor fin dings after taking this stuff apart a couple times. Something tells me I'm eventually going to chuck this thing and just get a decent affordable air unit. |
Re: I've decided.... The only DB ratings that are even accurate are the ones put out by server-fan companies. All the rest of them are a bunch of FUD. |
Re: I've decided.... Been doing some more digging and after narrowing it down to the Noctua, Nexus and Scythe, I am finding I like the Scythe Gentle Typhoons. I know for a fact their S Flex are fairly quiet and these are designed to be even quieter and they're very well balanced (low vibration) and durable. Yeah I know fans are often overrated in their specs, but then I've heard you say just recently here that you were disappointed you couldn't hear one you'd bought and have been known to swear by Deltas, which are among the loudest. |
Re: I've decided.... That was a panaflo, not delta. |

These deltas I just bought are the first ones I'm going to own. Maybe you're thinking of san aces. |
Re: I've decided.... @Daed, I never said I was going to use an S Flex as a rad fan, I said Gentle Typhoon, GT, as you just said. The S Flex I was referring to is currently being used for a mere rear exhaust fan. It's been implied on a few forums I've checked where people have used both the 1450 RPM GT and the 1850 RPM one that the 1850 is noticeably audible and the 1450 not. I worry that the 1450 won't give me any better performance though and maybe just be a bit quieter than what I have now. I can't help but think though that the 1850 RPM one wouldn't be as loud as the 2000 RPM H70 ones I tried, and probably no louder than the 1700 RPM H50, which is acceptable if I get noticeably better thermal perfromance. The GTs are designed for less turbulence and vibration and even claimed by Scythe to not resonate the frequencies the human ear can detect most (which most fans DO resonate). Unfortunately you never know till you get them installed. Some have said these are so well balanced you can hold one loose in your hand while it's running and feel NO vibration. @Kow, Yeah, those Deltas you just bought were mentioned just recently. So you HAVE in fact brought them up before as I said and since you just verified again that you bought them, how can you imply I'm wrong that you don't mind using a loud fan brand? Not saying you were wrong to buy them, it's just not something I'd prefer, and when someone implies you can't get accurate db specs, well, I'd rather get input from those whom have actually used fairly quite (under 30db) ones. |
Re: I've decided.... Quote:
I haven't even seen the deltas I bought in person. So how the hell could I say they're not that loud when I've never even seen them in person? Its not like I'm going to use those 70dba fans for daily use, you're gotta be kidding me. And just so you know, Delta isn't a loud-fan brand. They're an OEM for a ton of fan companies, chances are a fan in your system has a delta fan in it. They're more known for high-quality, not necessarily being high output. The only fans that I've said that aren't that loud are panaflo's and San aces, and thats because I have a fan controller on them(although, even at full speed the panaflo's are pretty quiet). Just because I buy high performance fans doesn't mean I haven't owned quiet ones. Yate loons of all types (which have extremely accurate noise ratings), low powered panaflo's, s-flex, GT, kaze ultras, various antec fans, silverstone, etc. Name a fan company and theres a good chance I've owned a few fans from them. Most of which have bloated CFM numbers and db numbers (funny how a yate loon mid with identical specs pushes more air and is quieter than a s-flex with the exact same numbers) |
Re: I've decided.... ENOUGH Kow, I'm not going to get in a ridiculous pissing contest with you over fans. You recently said something to the effect that you'd ordered a particular fan and was actually worried when you installed it and it didn't make much noise (not going to be bothered digging up the exact quote). That combined with you using any means (including advocating "If you aren't killing it, you're doing it wrong") to OC a system, and what else am I to think but this guy isn't the best one to get quiet PC advice from. Deal with that or talk to someone else about it because I'm done discussing it with you. GEEZ, it's like you always have to stick your nose into a conversation like everyone has to follow YOUR demented advice. |

Doesn't matter how good a fan is with noise/CFM, it'll still be noisey, unless it's 600RPM or something, unless it's undervolted. |
