Free .mkv or .ogm converter?

I've been scouring the web and I can't find any useful programs that can use .mkv or .ogm format. Does anyone know any programs, free or otherwise, that can convert to said formats? VLC is supposed to do it somehow but it's a horrible failure.

Ultimately I'm just trying to condense some videos and both formats have a great compression ratio and awesome audio quality.

If you're referring to FFDshow, which is included in the pack, I don't see any documentation on how to convert videos...

For conversion, Handbrake. I don't think it supports the ogm format, but it does support mkv.

Testing it out now. Thank you, no idea how I missed that, especially after searching on sourceForge twice...
