Not with lithium-ion batteries. In fact, running them down all the way will cause irreparable damage to them, and they may never charge again. That's why Windows (by default) automatically shuts down your laptop when the battery reaches 5%.

With earlier generations of batteries, it was indeed good to "calibrate" them by running them to zero and recharging once in a while...that may be true for your Thinkpad; I'm not sure how old the T41 is, but it's at least a couple years.

So is that why my iPhone turns itself off when it has 0% battery remaining and charges back up everytime without issue?
And yet has gone from lasting 2 days without a charge to only half a day?
oh and my Samsung SGH-i780 (which lasts for 3 hours from a full charge).

I can say the same for my old Acer laptop, my fiancé's Toshiba laptop, both lasted 10 minutes or so on a full charge, both had Lithium Ion batteries, both had the battery left in 24/7 even when fully charged, and both battery warranties said to remove it from the unit once it was fully charged.

Tell that to Windows XP on my R61e with a fresh install less than 5 weeks old.

From all my experience, the only thing Lithium Ion batteries have over others is they last longer and charge faster and cost more.
They sure as hell have almost their life span halved if over charged...That is, from every Lithium Ion battery I've ever had, or seen used.

Agreed. Which is exactly why I pointed it out. Apparently Lithium Ion batteries don't lose capacity from over charged, in the case of my iPhone, various laptops etc, they all have lost capacity from over charging.

2004 i think. Its got a lithium-ion battery for sure though.
