4gb DDR2 vs 2gb DDR3
 

So I was lurking around newegg tonight, and I was wondering...whats better? 4 gigs of DDR2 or 2gigs of DDR3?

I would base it on the future, wait for price to get lower for DDR3, or think of using it on another new motherboard later on, or not plan on using the old ram for the future.

If you have the money get DDR3, if you don't, 4gigs is the better idea.

Okay guys, thanks. I think il go with the 4 gigs of DDR2 and sell that down the road and buy 4 gigs of DDR3 when the price drops.

But uhh... you'll have to sell your motherboard and buy a new one too, because DDR3 isn't compatible with DDR 2 boards, and vice versa.

...and your CPU...and depending on the new motherboards slots, maybe your GPU...
and if you current motherboard doesn't have SATA...maybe your HDDS to invest in new SATA ones...

Well, 4 gigs of RAM is almost a requirement for games, and would outweigh any performance gain from DDR3. That said, the performance benefits from a well tuned DDR3 system would probably be worth it, and you could add more RAM later.

DDR2 and DDR3 are incompatible. If you go with DDR2, then you will be limiting yourself to older, slower processors and RAM. DDR2 is on its way out, and most of the cutting edge tech is put on DDR3 boards.

If your building a system, I would recommend a P55 board, a Core i5 Quad Core processor, and 4GB DDR3, paired with an ATI Radeon 4870, or 5770.

I originally thought to go with 4 gigs of DDR3.

RAM: Well, we lookin into that ATM
HDD: 500gb 7200rpm
Video Card: Geforce gtx 280 1gb (I already have this, thats why im gunna be using it)
Processor: AMD athlong X2 Regor @ 2.8ghz (will upgrade it to a quade core @ 3.4 ghz within a year of me building the PC)
OS: Windows XP 64 bit or 7

Its not the greatest board, but they do have a 1 year warranty. I've used ASRock boards a few times, to replace failed motherboards.

Reportedly, Asus had started the ASRock brand as their low end line.

To save more money, you can always get components used, just make sure they're in good shape.

He'd do fine with some value ram or so, he doesn't need this good expensive shit. Also, even with 2gb, games run smooth, don't say that 4gb of ultra ram is a must. :rolleyes:

TBH, the games I currently own are not power hogs in any way. The most demanding game would probably be Lost Planet :p

No, I dont need a 480 and 10 gigs of DDR3 ram, im thinking 3 :P

And the only games I want to try out are Far Cry 2, Crysis, BBC2 and possibly Just Cause 2.

AsRock is a good brand. AS stated above, it was an offshoot of Asus. They make budget boards that are full of usefull features such as ddr2 & ddr3 ram on the same board. I had an old skt 939 board that had both agp & pci express x16 slots . It was a great board.

That all runs fine 1080p on 3gb of DDR2 and 1gb on my gts250.
