Looking for video recording software, suggestions plz

Looking to record video and audio on my laptop while I make an instructional video in my modeling software Maya.

Would I use Fraps, or something else? I've never done video recording from my laptop before, total newb at it. I know I need a mic, I have that and have done some voice recording using Audacity, I'm comfortable with that.

I think Fraps only works fine in games.
Does it have to be in a common video format or can it be an .exe ?
Screen2Exe works quite fine, but I don't think you can save as an .avi or other common video format, only exe...

And BTW N88TR, I recommend Audacity for recording your audio. It records high quality, has tons of options, and is very easy to use. As for video, i'm not sure. I've never really needed a desktop recorder..

Yeah I'm very familiar with audacity but I was hoping to use a mic and record my voice in sync with the video. I'm reading tutorials on recording ATM.

And no rep... never ask for it. Besides I'm not big on giving rep these days.
