| I really really do. And I have tried to learn c++ on my own and it has been going ok i think, just c++ not openGl or sdl. But many say you should go to a college or a university to geat an education for this and I have been counting that I leave my current school next summer and enlisted myself to the finland military, so I'll be 23-24 when I get the degree or game programming if I want it And just seeing that people like CliffyB or John Carmack and almost all of these gamedesigners where very young when they started. So should i have started a long time ago or can i still make it?And then again at my age a year seems alot. hmmm. I am just not sure what to do. edit:// argh a small typo in the thread name Last edited by Veesaurus; 4 Weeks Ago at 04:40 PM.. |

| The industry was way different back when people like Cliff Bleszinski and John Carmack started out. These days it's all about huge multi-billion dollar international corporations. Indie developers rarely get anywhere anymore. Also, fixed your title typo.

| You want a job in the game industry and so do millions of other 12-18 year old kids. Unless you are truly talented at it you won't land a job. It is like getting into a rock band and making your living off of it. Yeah it is a cool dream, but only the top of the top make it. You are much better getting a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or computer engineering.

| What kind of job in the game industry? Design? Digital art? Software development? Marketing? Management? Accountancy?

| It's about a serious aspect of gaming so I'll leave it be. This isn't entirely true with the advent of large scale digital distribution, like Steam. However indies fill a sort of experimental niche. They are the ones that try new things, generally. You can make it in the gaming industry but you need to either have great technical skills, or superb creativity and writing skills.

| If you're really serious about this I recommend you enrol in a tertiary institution that offers a degree in game design/programming. Unless you're really talented, you probably won't be able to get a job with a big developer, since there are so many other kids that want your seat, and it means that you'll most likely be developing Indie games (which can be a way into a good job at a major company, again, if you're good enough), or you'll be finding another career. |

If you want to be a game engineer, you'd need to know as much c++ as you can, be proficient at high level math, etc. Not to mention you have to have made a few games yourself from start to boxing. If you want to be a modeler, you need to be really good at Maya or 3DS Max. You'd probably have to show a few (very) high quality models you've made for your game. You could always be a tester, though.
