Well if you're going for non-video media and windows x64 bit machine is a better choice mostly due to PS and other stuff on windows being a lot better than their OSxcounterparts which are often old code inside of a cocoa wrapper.

Plus unless I am mistaken there's no sixty four bit adobe stuff on OSx yet. There might be with snow leopard, but even that is pretty quaky with x64.

Honestly have no idea how it's with video, but I presume there might be a number of applications which are as good as the current industry standards. Their issue is, that no one is used to working with them.

Same reason why macs dominate in vector and raster graphics media as well currently. It's not that the macis superior (it clearly isn't anymore) but ther ewas a time, when it's color output was a bit before that of windows machines.

This is no longer the case, but the industry adopted macs and since everyone uses them, many folks are just used to them. And live in a dream of OSX>windows.

When it comes to the designs - I agree the macbook looks awesome, the metal case is good as well. The problem is you can get metal body laptops with windows as well (for instance I'm typing this from a gx630) which has weathered a whole lot of abuse already.

Style is also not unreachable on the PC. In a similar price range as macs, you've got the Dell Adamo. So if you have cash to burn, I'd personally get that for instance instead of a macbook.

When it comes to other factors.
Well macs have massive CUI problems. Plus the dock is a serious offender, the finder is more crash happy than explorer when it has flu and currently OSx has a large number of serious exploits existing for it.

Sixty-four bit support is sketchy and it's font blurring is damn ugly. I really hope apple get's a strike of genius and actually realises that the pixel grid is good for a computer screen.

Plus the application menus not being directly in the application is a pretty bloody bother as well in my opinion. Again CUI problems.

Of course on another look it has a few nifty stuff. The apple virtual desktops are awesome and run a lot better than most windows third party counterparts.

In the end of the day, I'd still rather buy a windows machine. Partly because I'm used to it (as are most likely you as well to yours) and because there's just so much stuff I use that I couldn't bring with me.

Oh yeah and anyone read the first line of the apple manual. Things like that make me throw up inside. Same as the new apple adds.

I personally would never bring alienware stuff into the equation because for some reason people believe that they get something absolutely awesome if they cash out a hoard of money.
Still the alienware has one point that the apple machine doesn't really well - open hardware without hunting for obscure kexts

Also when speaking of build quality. To be honest macbooks have a couple of problems which range from minor to serious. Like overheating and this destroying a certain important piece of hardware. (I believe the newer ones fixed this)

Also some questionable moves on apple's part recently - like the no removable battery, the absolute borked to hell snow leopard - oh look I have let's try the guest account for once..where the hell is my DATA!

Most big animation studios actual use Linux. The argument that video & rendering studios use Macs is old hat.
The biggest point I hear from these adds is "Apple is rated # 1 in Customer Satisfaction". People are getting this confused with Customer Service. Two TOTALLY different things. This makes their argument even weaker. I mean, what EXACTLY does that mean?
"Do you like your Mac?...Yes?...Are you satisfied with it?...Yes?"
"Do I like my custom built quad core PC?...Yes?...Am I satisfied with it?...Yes?" See...that really means jack crap.
Apple is lame with these pathetic commercials. Why not tell me WHY a Mac is better. What innovations make it better? What features make it better?...they haven't got anything to say on that. I think THAT speaks volumes...

Even the first commercials they mentioned that Macs can't get viruses, that commercial was a lot more compelling than the "Give up on Vista" commercial, which just made me happy with my PC set up with XP

Can't do that sorry. That would go against their whole ethos of making people buy their product purely because it looks good, because it's expensive, ergo it must be better, and because Apple say so.

Which is completely untrue. Anyone can get a virus if they're stupid enough. It's just that to get a virus on a Mac you kind of have to be a bit more stupid than you would have to be to get a virus on a PC.

I would love to see someone release a virus specifically for Macs. Then people could sue Apple for false advertising.

Its happened before. I don't remember what it was called or what exactly it did, but i do remember hearing about it and that it was pretty serious. I think that was back in the OS9 days though.

There was a virus for the Mac called the "Cheese worm", and NO I did NOT make it. It was a simple thing that infected the Unix side of the Mac, but that was a loooong time ago.
