My stuff arrived.

Some of it anyways, I just gotta wait for my next paycheck to get here then I can order the RAM, PSU, HD, and Motherboard. But for now, check out my 4890 and Phenom II:

Oh, man, that has got to kill you. Just ...looking at it! Not being able to do anything with it...oh the pain!

It really is killing me :'(

I'm sure that fondling that 4890 would help... =p

Ummm....that was supposed to be a secret ;)

What's with the fishnet stockings? At least have the decency to undress her when you photograph her. :p

She's sensitive to static electricity, so until my other stuff arrives she's comfy staying in her fishnets ;)

Just looking at what you have so far and admiring it should occupy you enough till you can get the rest.

Of course she is, but you're making her anxious and she knows you're going to undress her eventually anyway. :D

Of course, but she knows it'll be worth it ;)

You might want to keep yourself busy by replacing the stock thermal paste on that thing. Should keep you satisfied for a day or two :D

I'd rather not accidentally cause a major rift in time & space before I got to even try it out :D

Pshh. voiding the warranty before you haven't even used it is where all the fun is at.

Yeah well I'd rather stick with it the way it is, I had to work really hard this summer to save up the money for this rig, and I don't want to risk destroying it after all the work I put into it :) I'll save the dismantling for my next rig ;)

Agreed.
I put a tiny bit of AS5 onto my GTX 275 and temps rose by 20*C lol, and I've checked and double checked it's seated properly and all.
I won't be doing that again in a hurry lol.

... there goes me putting OCZ Freeze on my 380.

It's actually rather annoying, it's rendered gaming on my system for longer then 45 minutes useless.
Any longer then that and it gets to hot and the game hard locks the system, or the drivers crash and hard lock the system.
So now I find myself having to go and buy an after market cooler just to make the system somewhat useable again.
Next time I don't take Kow's advice lol.

He mounted it wrong. You're NEVER supposed to get higher temps from applying thermal paste, even if you went and threw on some generic white paste your temps would drop.

LoL
You mounted it incorrectly which is why you have higher temperatures. Make sure there are no air bubbles in the paste. And seriously, good luck finding an aftermarket heatsink for your video card. The GTX series is HORRIBLE for aftermarket support. You can use a HR-03GTX which doesn't have sufficient cooling on the vregs or.... you can put it on water. And thats about all your options so far.

>Omen< July 26th, 2009 12:23 PM

Re: My stuff arrived.

Yeah I have to agree with Kow here, there's no way you should get higher temps, esp with a reputable brand of paste.

*The.Doctor July 26th, 2009 07:25 PM

Re: My stuff arrived.

I put OCZ Freeze on my 4870 and my temps are exactly the same as they were. Its not a reference card though, its Sapphires "Toxic Edition" with their custom PCB and cooler so maybe they already had some good stuff slapped in there from the factory.

Re: My stuff arrived.

If I use aftermarket paste, I'm definitely using Arctic Silver 5, heard lots of great things about that.

*Daedalus July 26th, 2009 08:08 PM

Re: My stuff arrived.

I'd have a look at OCZ Freeze also. I've seen a couple of comparisons, and it tends to beat AS5 by a couple of degrees under load.

In all seriousness, ICD7 is good. It's diamond-based, and diamond has thermal conductivity way better than silver.

Re: My stuff arrived.

ICD7 tastes gross. Cheese plz.

Re: My stuff arrived.

Meh, I'd say get either OCZ freeze, or AS5, whichever is easier to get, but don't put it on your GPU until you decide it needs to cool down/you know it works.

And thats exactly why I didn't ask for help from anyone here, because I know that it IS mounted correctly and I've had 2 people who have installed after market heatsinks onto their GPUs to check it out aswell, they both agree it's mounted correctly.

kow_ciller July 27th, 2009 11:51 AM

Re: My stuff arrived.

Well, you didn't clean it properly then. Or you broke the temp sensor on the GPU. Core temp will never go up no matter what by changing the paste. Maybe you should reseat and repaste again.

Theres no way to tell that the sink is mounted properly without removing the heatsink and checking the paste. Unless you've done that you cant tell if the mount is on properly or not.

Re: My stuff arrived.

Hell, an elite gaming rig should warrant something exotic, like Gorgonzola or Brie, and no nasty smell. LOL

On thermal pastes, I read a while back that some were saying IC Diamond is now the new king. I haven't researched it thoroughly, but I know Petra Tech carries it.

I'll have to take a look at that stuff. I never heard of it before.

+1 on OCZ Freeze for sure though. That stuff is the best paste i've used yet, definitely better than AS5.

>Omen< July 28th, 2009 12:51 AM

Re: My stuff arrived.

Yeah, Arctic Silver is going to have to come up with a new formula to compete with all the new comers. Even some of the paste that comes with some HSs anymore comes close to AS5.

I've removed it lol and checked the paste, I've probably damaged the sensor, but in terms of seating and pasting i've double and tripple checked myself and with others and we all agree its fine.
I'm not terribly bothered, just renders gaming almost useless for any length of time and just mean's I wont try and change pastes again, its more hassle then it's worth in my experiance.
