Arrow Graphics Card Guide (Updated 10/25/09)

As promised in overclocking guide/tips thread, I've redone the graphics card guide that has been sitting untouched in the tech discussion master sticky since sometime way back in '06. All the missing and new cards have been added, and this time there is now even a mobile graphics guide to go along with the desktop version. Hopefully this will help with all the thread on people asking "which is better?" or "ATI or Nvidia?", and will be helpful just to see how things compare in general.

Desktop Graphics Guide:
Spoiler:

DESKTOP GRAPHICS CARD GUIDE

Guide Key:

Red = ATI
Green = nVIDIA

Notes:

* All cards are rated from best to worst
* This guide represents overall performance based on best possible conditions, results can and will vary from game to game, and are highly dependent on the rest of your hardware specs.
* SLI / Crossfire results have not been included, except in the case of single cards with multiple GPUs.
* All ATI Radeon X1000 series and nVIDIA Geforce 6000 series and better support SM 3.0.
* All ATI Radeon HD 2000 series and nVIDIA Geforce 8000 series and better support DX 10.0
* All ATI Radeon HD 3000 series and up support DX 10.1
* All ATI Radeon HD 5000 series and up support DX 11

Is it just me, or is the mobile chart a little messed up at the high end? A 280M really isn't that much better than a 260M.

Maybe:

nVIDIA Geforce GTX 280M SLI
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4870 X2
nVIDIA Geforce GTX 260M SLI
nVIDIA Geforce 9800M GTX SLI
nVIDIA Geforce 9800M GT SLI
nVIDIA Geforce GTX 280M
nVIDIA Geforce 9800M GTS SLI
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3870 X2
nVIDIA Geforce GTX 260M
nVIDIA Geforce 8800M GTX SLI
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3850 X2
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4870

nVIDIA Geforce 9800M GTX

ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4860
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4850

But good work! It's about time that guide was updated.

I'd bump the 4770 to high-performance above the 3870x2. And you might want to switch the 275 and 280, then put the 4890 in the middle. You might also want to add:

* All ATI Radeon HD 3000 series and up support DX 10.1

The 280 is more powerful than the 275...

Edit: LOL, apologies kow! Just looked at the list.

I didn't think it was.

EDIT: I've taken the liberty of adding kow's and Daed's suggestions into the list, and added to the SLI/Crossfire note. May I ask why the 8800GTS is in black?

In the Mobile list, the Mobility Radeon HD 4570 is NOT a low performance card; it's gotta be somewhere in the mid range. Considering it can play CoD4 on my laptop at native 1600x900 with everything but antialiasing on, it's certainly nothing to be trifled with.

I thought the 275 could slightly (very slightly) out perform it most of the time.

No reason. I just missed it when i was doing the colors.

I also just noticed i missed the 8400M G towards the bottom of the mobile list. That ones black as well.

So where do you think the high end, midrange, and low end cut offs should be for the mobile list? I'm not very familiar with mobile cards at all.

I think you should move the Mobility Radeon 4570 and 3650, as well as the nVidia 8600m GS and GT to the Midrange category, and take the 9500m GS down to low; the 9500 is actually a hybrid SLI of 9400m integrated with the 9200m dedicated.

Also, I would move the Intel GMA X3100, 950 and 900 down to an even lower category (Honorable mentions? ). The 4500 and 4700 series should stay, though, they're actually decent.

You should check out forum.notebookreview.com, the guys there can offer you a lot of insight into the world of laptops.
