The message could mean that you have a dead firefox process still in the system. Open the task manager and close all firefox instances, then open the program only once and wait till it opens, that might help.

Also, I think there is a new version (3.5) that you could try.

3.5 FEELS much faster than any previous version of FF (at least to me)

What the heck is wrong with their auto updater? I was at 3.0 and didn't even know there was a 3.5 because it wasn't installing any updates. There seems to be no way to manually update it either. I thought it may have been because 3.5 is a beta, but there's no indication it is.

Anyways, got 3.5 installed. So far I don't really see any speed increase, though haven't used it much yet. I guess it could be slightly faster at loading pages though.

I didn't know there was a 3.5 either. Oh well, I can't be bothered to upgrade. Only a few extensions have been tested/upgraded for compatibility.

However, once I manually checked for updates (Help -> Check for Updates) it detected the 3.5.

The release notes indicate that it was released on the 30th of June.
Mozilla Firefox 3.5 Release Notes

I'll stick with 3.0x for now.

Its not a fix for your problem, but i would recommend using Opera 10 instead.

Its like lightning compared to FF 3.5 for me.

Make sure you get it from here:

Opera Web Browser | Faster & safer | Download the new Internet browsers free

Otherwise you'll be getting 9.6 since 10 isn't in final release yet.

Opera IS fast, but I only like it for times that I really need the speed, like reading reviews on gaming gear. Such sites can load slowly due to all the ads if you don't have a fast browser. I don't really like Opera for forum chatting though, which is much of what I do on the net. Opera is not quite as good at some things, and it gets annoying.
