for some reason recently i've been getting auto linked to this doctor virus website thing and it wont leave me alone. it keeps telling me that i have spyware on my laptop and when i do break down and download the auto checkup norton antivirus stops it and takes care of the problem itself. but then it still comes back and bugs me again saying that there are still spyware. wtf?
You should probably know that malware disguising itself as legitimate antivirus/antimalware programs are becoming a lot more common these days. You should always be on the lookout for 'programs' that claim to know more than they should about your computer while you're browsing - Microsoft takes ages and ages to upload even system information, so it's virtually impossible that someone could have legitimately done a comprehensive scan of your computer while you are browsing. It's even less likely that if your computer is fine that it is infected with as many trogans and viruses as these rogue programs report.
Before you download anything like this, wiki it (this is the wiki page for the thing you downloaded), google it, or search for it in the database of a commercial software security company - Symantec used to have a really good database of malicious software. If all else fails, come here and ask.
You probably should get a legit AV program such as Avast! as well, and do a full scan of your PC. Who knows how much other junk may have accumulated over the years...
