Router & Ports & Servers

Over the period of two years I've been trying to get my own server online just using my basic internet however this never seems to work out. Whenever I open ports they do absolutely nothing for the other player who's trying to connect. At the moment I'm trying to do Call of Duty 4 and I've opened the ports, I think :) I don't know how the process works so a lot of the time I just portforward the right numbers maybe in the wrong sequence. If anyone could help me I'd be very happy!

Picture ; As you can see I opened a bunch of Ports as I don't know the correct order.

I do not know much about COD4 (read: nothing); however, I do know that often you have to modify some server config settings for a server to work properly. These are game-specific settings, of course, and I am not able to help you figure out which ones since I do not even have COD4. Sorry :(

Right, I think your getting a little confused between a Firewall and a Network Address Translator.

Your main problem is that your opening ports on your firewall and then not doing anything with the NAT config. Basicially, you have two IP addresses. The first is your external, say 81.100.21.1 and the second is the address your computer has on your network, say 10.0.0.2

Your problem is that you have not set your NAT device up to foward the ports that Call of Duty uses to play. Therefore, someone attempts to access 81.100.21.1 and it only gets as far as your firewall because the NAT device does not have any rules set up for fowarding the relevant ports to your PC. You need to set it up to foward whichever ports CoD uses from the NAT to your PC.

Okay, I've got some of that. How do I set up the NAT? I really need some directions here.

Read the manual. Failing that, ring BT technical support or google for a guide for your system.
