[Help] Beeping Error on Reboot

Well, to make my story short, I tried upgrading (for the first time) on my PC. I followed the instructions for installation carefully from my laptop after research, & now I have this issue when I try to stat yp my desktop.

TO clarfy what I did, I exchanged my power supply & 2 memory sticks with newer ones passed to me from my Uncle. The quality of the parts were exceptional, so I know that is not the problem.

After installing both, I hooked up my computer & booted it. My screen stays black & the computer emits this long beep that endlessly loops after a brief pause. After that, I quickly re-exchanged all the parts with their originals, & still my computer does the same thing.

I checked the memory sticks, & they seem to be properly installed, & everything seems to function power-wise....so I'm stumped on what could be the issue

Any information on what the error is & what I can do will be heavily appreciated.

P.S. Just for clarification, I'm using a HP Pavillion A465W desktop running XP, if that helps at all.

Are you sure you plugged in all of the power connections? I don't know about an older Athlon XP system like that but a modern Intel system won't run unless there's a second power connector plugged into the mobo.

I doubt an old HP will have any extra power connections, but that's indeed still worth checking. Anyway, other than that it might be possible that you had failed to put the memory properly in, are you 100% sure they clipped in properly?
You might also have put them in the wrong slots if more than two are available, at least mine starts beeping when they are in the wrong slots (obviously I need to install mine in slots 2 and 4, which I didn't remember when I replaced mine...).

Well, my MoBo only has 2 slots for memory, & I beleive the cards are identical...Would it matter which card was in which slot? I'm quite positive that they're in properly, because if I turn them around, they won't go in as far. Do the side clips have to fit into the greaves of the memory, or just touch?

I'm alos pretty sure that the power is properly connected, cause everything flashes as usual. Although it has some extra power connections. Ok, for what I can guess; I connect the power source to my CD & DVD Drives, Floppy Drive, Hard Drive, & to the MoBo twice (1 very small one & a very large long plug)

...Think I'm forgetting anything?

By the way, thanks for the addvice so far, & sorry for being n00bish in any way about this. I did my research, but still a bit confused.

The clips for the ram socket has to snap to greaves on the memory. Go to Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com and see if your compatible with that ram. When mine doesn't have any memory in it it also beeps a lot. All the other things seem to be good. Lol and for the noobish comment thing, it doen't matter, everyone's gotta start somewhere and no one knows everything about computers.

EDIT: Also Huffardo doesn't mean flip them around he means switch what slot there in.

Take the RAM out and push the clips in towards the center of the slot while the slots are empty. They should go that far in when the RAM is installed, the entire point of those clips (and the grooves on the RAM) is to hold it in the slot. Push it down hard enough and the clips should click into place properly anyway, but it's worth checking.

The power connections sound fine, I was half expecting that you'd forgotten the smaller plug on the motherboard as it's easy to miss, but you got it.

...Success!

It turns out that the RAm wasn't placed in just quite 'all the way' ^_^'. I guess since I'm very gentle with computer pieces, I didn't realize you had to give it a littme more force than I originally gave, Now I know

Well, thanks for all of the advice & responses to my question when I was in need. Now, I can muster up the courage to attempt the upgrade again tomorrow ^_^.

Heheh, sadly tho, through my earlier experience, I butchered my right middle finger (Also known to gamers as the finger for Right mouse Key, Alt-Fire, ect =P) so my gaming's gonna be on hiatus for awhile. Hell, I wouldn't even have noticed any cut flesh if it wasn't for the new blood on my computar case innards
