Should I or shouldn't I?

Should I or shouldn't I install win 2000 pro. All I pretty much do is play games and browse the net on here. My net connect is configured perfectly right now, all hardware is running nicely.

Opinions?

I've gotta make a cut paste of this - too many of these questions... http://www.voodooextreme.com/forums/smile.gif

Unless you're a gear head, I recommend sticking with 98 and waiting for the Millenium edition (the next version of Win9x) - ESPECIALLY if everything is working 100% right now.

Win 2K is not a gaming OS and if gaming is your main bag, it's not worth it. Keep in mind that Win2K is a business OS. It's major benefits are stability (not that Win98 is all that bad - my Win98 system never gets turned off and can run for months without a re-boot), a more efficient disk system, and true multithreading (something that doesn't benefit games much). You will not see any real fps improvement in your games under Win2K.

Those of us who also use their computers for heavy duty stuff like graphics workstation work, programming, multitrack recording, etc will benefit far more from going to Win2K.

Like it's older brother NT 4, Win2K (although friendlier than NT) is a very arcane OS and difficult to troubleshoot for the casual user.

Keep in mind also that there is NO GOING BACK when you upgrade to Win2K - there's no uninstall. If things go badly, and they can, you'll have to wipe the drive and re-install 98 clean to try to get back to where you were.

HOWEVER, if you need to learn Win2K for work, setting it up on your home system is a good way to learn it. I would STRONGLY recommend making a ghost of your boot drive before upgrading so that you can restore your Win98 system as it is now if things go wrong. I would also recommend setting up a dual boot since there are, and will likely continue to be some games and apps that won't work properly under Win2K.

The only other concern is drivers and app compatibility. Go to these sites for details:
