Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Ok, I'll keep it simple. Was looking around in nTune today, looked at my GPU temp, and it was @ 63' C. Okay, may not sound too bad, but this is an 8600GT while idling. I've seen reports of people with 8600 GT's @ 30'C w/ stock cooling AND an overclock. Is there an obvious reason mine is running so warm? (It's honestly not a big deal, as long as I'm <80'C, I'm happy). Now, about the upgrade.. Was thinking about getting myself an Ati Radeon 3870 HD. I saw one @ Newegg for about $150, and the talk of the town is that this card is the best out there now as far as price/performance goes. Looking at benchmarks/statistics, I should see reasonable improvements in gaming. Anyways, let me know what you guys think and thanks! :D |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Wow.. No replies? Surprising.. Bump. =P |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. HA! For bumping a thread that was only 5 minutes old, with no replies, I'm not going to provide my advice! There is no reason to bump a thread with no replies, 5 minutes after you created it!! |

Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. LULZ. Maybe the cooler on yo graphics card is wack. Maybe the OCing has made it piping hot like tea. My 8800GT idles at 40ish and yours should too or even less. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Mine 8600GT sits at about 54 and never gos over with my cooling tool. |

:O STUPID OPERA! EPIC LOLS! Opera is saying the same thing as it did when I posted that post... 19 minutes ago for post 1, and 14 minutes ago for post 2! :/ Crazy Opera... In that case, your GPU is funky dude, my 8800GT idles at 42C, Load is 45C |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Quote:
Hell, even a HD 3850 would completely destroy any 8600 no problem. You would probably see at least double the framerate in some games with a 3870. About your heat issue, my overclocked 3850 idles at about 40C, and goes up to 65-70C under load. That's with the stock cooler and the fan set to 80%. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. a nvidia 9600gt will out perform a 3870 & is the same price. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. ^lol 9600GT = 5% faster then an 8600GT 8800GT = Cheaper + Faster then 3870HD (Atleast, tis for what I can buy it for) |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. in the us: 9600gt- 149 usd 8800gt- 199 usd & a 9600gt is only 10-20% slower than the 8800gt. http://www.hothardware.com/articleim...crysis1680.png http://www.hothardware.com/articleim...12/wic1680.png http://www.hothardware.com/articleim...12/hl21680.png Oh, btw...the increase from a 8600 to a 9600 is more like 50% as the 9600 has twice as many stream processors. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Is the cooling in your case up to the job? If insufficient air goes through it, the card will get hot and stay hot. |

Thanks Count, you might have just saved me from ATI's death trap. I'll probably go with either EVGA or XFX as far as the 9600GT goes. And, I'll need to upgrade my PSU as well. Got any good recommendations for that? Quote:
I have the stock CPU cooler, then a 120 MM rear exhaust fan, but it seems like it doesn't move too much air. So i might think about adding another 120 MM fan, replacing the crap one, and replacing the CPU cooler with something better. If that doesn't do it, I dunno what will. Thanks everyone for your replies except Sgt. D. Pilla.. :D |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. If your getting a 9600GT, don't. Get an 8800GT instead. 8800GT's beat 9600GT's in the long run. They have like the same power needs, 9600GT, newer technology, so fair ploy. But still, 8800 some GT. |

Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. The 8800GT is cheaper, Faster *That bench mark is RUBBISH*. The 9600GT is bearly faster then the 8600GT Quote:
N00B! The 9600GT has a bigger cooler then the 8800GT does, which is why the 8800GT had a fair bit of 'fail card' when it was released, a 30mm fan doesn't do shit to it. Every stock 9600GT I've seen has a 40mm fan and exhaust, every 8800GT I've seen has a 30mm fan and exhaust Also, you could save up for like...another week before jumping into a 9600GT. I guarentee you will be dissapointed with it. *Another note, 8800GT, High Spec Graphics, 1680*1050 is 40FPS in Crysis, VeryHigh Spec is 22FPS* |

Spoiler: Also, you can see benchmarks with the 9600GT and 8600GT at Anandtech: AnandTech: Bringing Competition to Midrange: The GeForce 9600 GT Raises NVIDIA's Sub $200 Bar I will note that the 8800GT is definitely a good buy right now. Here is one for only $140 after rebate Newegg.com - ZOTAC ZT-88TES3P-FCP GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards That specific ZOTAC 8800GT got a great review too: A sweet 16 mid-range graphics cards compared - The Tech Report - Page 12 Confusingkid, what kind of games do you want to play on your PC? Second, what is your budget? |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Pilla, seriously, man....I know you know your tech stuff, but you are WAAAAAAY wrong on this one. The 9600gt is slightly slower than the 8800gt, twice as powerful as a 8600gt. Also, all 88000gt's produced now have the beefier cooler found on the 9600gt & 8800gts'. It is a 2 slot cooler. CK, go with the evga. their customer service is beyond excellent. I knocked a capacitor off my old 7900gt(purely my own fault), & they replaced it no questions asked. Then when I fried it with a volt mod, they rlpaced it with a 8800gt 320mb since they quit making the 7900gt. Real cool guys. |

I think my budget will be around $210-$215 (I know, a weird number, it's the money I got for making a website for a business, which, they no longer even use.. :p) That Zotac one looks good, but I would prefer a more trusted brand like EVGA XFX, PNY, etc. Is Zotac any good? Quote:
And Count, that is an inspiring EVGA story. :D Really though, it's awesome. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. If you can...save up for the 8800gt. I have an xfx xxx8800gt 512mb(clocked at 670/1700 & it owns. I would recommend a minimum wattage of 500(no less) for a new psu. Go with a reputable brand such as ocz, antec or seasonic(they are costly, though). A psu is one area NOT to go on the cheap. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Antec Earthwatts 500w PSU $60 Newegg.com - Antec earthwatts EA500 500W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CUL, FCC, TUV, CE, CB, C-tick, CCC - Power Supplies EVGA 8800GT $160 with rebate. EVGA is said to have superb customer support. They also have lifetime warranty on their product, and they have that great 90-day trade in program. I am not sure however about how EVGA warranty covers OCing and modification done to the card. Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards Only $5 over budget. Not bad. |

But I'm not 100% sure it really IS 250W.. Quote:

Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Prices will without a doubt go down by then. Within the next few weeks, both ATI and NVIDIA will release their next generation cards (all priced $250+). NVIDIA will most likely try to continue to compete competitively through lowering the prices of their last-gen cards. |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Quote:
Looks like I chose a good time to upgrade then eh? I wonder how much of a drop they'll see. Hopefully something substantial and not like $5. :p |
Re: Question about GPU temp and possible upgrade. Most 8800GT's have big coolers now, mine has an intense Zalman. |
