It's also worth mentioning that certain schools and colleges sell commonly used software (such as MS Office) at reduced prices for students, or may even offer it for free. Can't hurt to ask.

OOo is a safe bet, though.

Microsoft lets you download Trial versions of their software.

I did a presentation not even a month ago and I made it entirely in OpenOffice. It went flawlessly, no compatibility errors, no nothing, so if you don't wanna bother with trial versions and such, do go for OpenOffice. This is pretty much for everyone who needs something like that.
