Massive Backups Steamlined?
 

I am on the verge of putting my new computer components together and I will have 3 hard drives in all [250 gig, 300 gig, 500 gig [all SATA II]]. I don't want to use my current one, a 110 gig WesternDigital, cuz if I have a 250, 300 or 500 to choose from why pick a 110. Anyways I want to backup my data on the 110 quickly and efficiently. The total size of the files I want to back up is 73 gig. I have a DVD and DVD-DL burner, but they cost quite a bit for each disc, the DLs esp. Would a USB 2.0 device like this or this be my best option? Thanks.

Those will work, although I'd be cautious with the 80gb WD drive because their actual capacity will be around 75gb, so that's cutting it a bit close.

Personally I'd just stick all your drives in the PC and be done with it...

Yeah, if you've got room, you're better off sticking all of the drives in there.

But if you must, you could pop in one of the new drives, copy the data from your current drive onto the new one, and then remove the old drive and put in the new ones.

Don't hard drives put out a lot of heat? 'Sides, I only have 3 hard drive slots in my case...

Anyway it's safer to get the data backup HDD in only at the time of backing up (or restoring should that ever happen) : you never know when an electrical problem might happen and kill all the connected ones ... it's always better to keep your backups external.

What are you talking about? :confused:.

He's saying that using an external drive for backups is better (i.e. safer) than an internal drive.

Or an internal that you unplug... so it's stored externally :p
