WindowsMediaPlayer Problems

About a month ago I downloaded VLC media player which works well with more formats than WMP, but has issues with my older gaming videos which are in MPEG2, AVI, and ASF. Regardless, the files I once played in WMP, modeling tutorials for 3dsmax, no longer work in WMP. As soon as I try to play them I get a codec error. WTF WMP?! They played perfectly fine 2 months ago, and now I get an error? I don't know what kind of codec I need....Help?

Download the XP Codec Pack (google it). Should have pretty much every codec under the sun in it.

Installing codeces that you don't need is a very bad thing do. Never install codec packs. You will notice bugs/crashes and even blue screens in programs completely unrelated to media players.

Anyways mpeg and avi are common. VLC will have no problems playing it unless something is wrong.

Use Dependency Walker:
http://www.dependencywalker.com/

Find out which .dlls appear once you play some of your videos to see if there is a conflict.

You may also try to play them with BS Player (last freeware, non-adware stuffed version is available here : http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=bsplayer ). That's my main video player

Well I'm downloading programs to fix programs, so I'm going with the codec pack. I just wish there was ONE program to play all my multimedia formats. WMP is shit, I've stuck with it for so long, I want to make it work. God, I updated to WMP 11 [I couldn't stop it, it forced me to upgrade] and now it has that damned Vista GUI.

Yuh-huh. Suuuure ya will. Perhaps next time consider downloading a legitimate codec pack like the XP Codec Pack I suggested (or alternatively the K-Lite Codec pack) from a legitimate website; rather than some malware infested piece of shit?

It's like saying never download an anti-Spyware program, because those popups on websites advertising dodgy anti-Spyware software put crap on your computer. Again, use the right one and get it from the right place. Sorted.

Sorry that you have misunderstood. Third party codecs may cause a variety of issues from performance to stability *creative labs, nero, powerdvd, some games, etc, etc...* Also a codec may have no detrimental effects but looking through what .dll files are used will allow you to identify these codecs. Temporarily rename them to rule them out as any potential issues conflict or otherwise.

It really isn't about spyware at all. Just thought I would throw this out so some people could learn. If you still don't understand http://doom9.net/ is your friend. I would hope you understand that .dll doesn't mean trojan/malware.

The bit about spyware programs was an example I used to illustrate my point that just because some things cause problems, it doesn't mean everything will. I'd kinda hoped you understood that...
