Difference between D3D and 3dfx ??

Is there any difference by the graphics if I use a D3D-card or a 3dfx-card? I use a Nvidia GeForce-card with 32 Mb memory but I have the feeling that I do not have the same graphics like they are shown here on this site. These ones look much better than mine (e.g. explosions or weapons fire) So I wonder I there is a difference between the two graphics systems. Perhaps someone has an answer

3dfx is just a brand of card....A 3dfx card runs D3D, open gl, and glide....Your Geforce card will run D3D and open gl....only diff. in the two is your card will not run glide which you can only get with a 3dfx card...glide is not as widely used now days it is mostly in alot of older games...3dfx is out of business so I wouldnt recommend you looking to buy one unless you have some older games that support glide http://www.veforums.com/smile.gif

You should get good performance out of your geforce card running games in D3D

The difference in D3D and OpenGL are about 40 to 50 fps in games :P In COunter Strike I get 40 to 50 fps in D3D and OpenGL I get average 70 to 99 fps! An there is NO quality difference. But of course that was on my voodoo 3, until I got the current mx 200 and get 40 to 80 fps in OpenGL http://www.veforums.com/frown.gif

Just as has been mentioned, OpenGL is MUCH faster than D3D. I also have never seen a difference in visual quality between the two, so if you can, by all means use OpenGL. But if you get the Geforce card, OpenGL won't be an issue anyway.
As far as 3DFX goes, the company IS dead. I was totally taken by the announcement back in Dec/2000, but business is business. Recently I blew up my Voodoo3 2000 by overclocking too long. Oh well, I tried the Geforce, didn't like it, ordered a Radeon from Newegg.com, and took that Geforce back to the store. I'm sure the Geforce cards are great, especially the $300 variety, but the Radeon is more along my lines. The visual quality is better, and I like my frame rate better. But that's just me. (It's still no Voodoo though. Glide mode ROCKS!!)
