Raid

Anyone know if small capacity IDE drives are available. I'm thinking maybe 4-8 gigs for a reasonable price. That way I can built a raid array using 4 disks which will have a decent performance and not ridiculous capacity.

I doubt you'd find ATA66/100 drives that small. 15 Gb is probably the smalles they make now.

With 20 - 30 Gb drives selling for $100 on sale occasionally, I don't think price is a major issue.

The 15 gig is the smallest I have seen also. Soon 10 gig drives will be the smallest you can get in most any format.

try e-bay, or another auction site. although I wouldn't reccomend using them in raid since the overall speed wouldn't be too hot due to the drives being poor performers. and then you gotta take the law of degredation (i think???), that says shows that the more of something you put together the less benefit you'll recieve. therefore you'll reach a point where your harddrives are no longer offering much improvement to the speed.

well there's that,

I have actually seen a Western Digital 10 Gb ATA100 in a friend's computer - I thought it was unusual at the time. Doubt you can find anything smaller than that.

As for raid itself, you'll probably want at least one extra drive and to RAID 5 it. As much as RAID 5 is slower on writing stuff, you'll notice two things:
1) It's the fastest of them all for reading (IME).
2) If one of the drives dies, you simply swap in your spare and give it a couple of hours to rebuild your data.

Yeah, Drat, but is it ATA66? I doubt it. I really don't think they ever made one smaller than 10 Gb except MAYBE for OEM.
