Question about dvd video recorder.

My Mom has a Toshiba HDD/DVD video recorder that just stopped working and what I need to know is if there is a way to transfer the videos from this one to the new one.

Re: Question about dvd video recorder.

Do you mean she has a DVR (a digital video recorder)? If so, you could try opening the device up, and removing the hard drive in it.

You could then purhcase an external HD inclosure and (if the new unit has a firewire or USB port) plug the drive into it. However, there are certianly no guarentees that it would work. The video stored on the hard drive was likely protected by some form of DRM (digitial rights management), and the data may not be readable by any other device than your mother's broken DVR.

But if you do open it, chances are you'll void the warranty on it (assuming it still has one, HD recorders are quite new so it might same some left...), so depends which is worth more to her; the programs or the money she'll spend on a new one.
