Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

I really screwed things up, whatever i did it involves me screwing around in important files. So because of that XP could not load the explorer for shit, it was just incapable of doing it, thats how bad i messed up. But anyway because of that i had to restore my system, i was just going along with the instructions and then it said that my data and such would remain and anything i downloaded onto computer would remain. So anyway after the restore was done i was back on my computer and it looked just like it had when i first bought it, which is a bad thing, it had all the excess crap like wild tangent, and symantec, and free music, aol blah blah blah crap on it. So i restarted but i didn't get a log on screen, so i went to my documents and setting and saw two owner profiles. One said access is denied and i assume thats were all my previous info and everything else is but it says access is denied so i dont know how i can log into it even though i know the password. Is there anyway i can get windows to at least ask me for a password or show it on the login screen becauce ive acessed the log in screen but it only shows the profile im using now.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

You reformatted. That clears your entire XP installation and pretty much everything on your hard drive.
Go to control panel and user profiles then make a profile you want.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

If you got an access denied message, the account you're using probably isn't even an admin account.

if you did a reformat and a fresh install, your files are gone......if you only did a repair install then they *should* be there

What accounts are listed in the user accts panel?

marvinmatthew August 30th, 2006 11:38 AM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Right. Go to control pannel>user account>create new account. And make sure that you're new account is an admin one.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

If you can't enter any account in the first place:

restart in safe mode and you will have another passwordless account available.

The account im being forced to use now is the only one there, but then why in documents and settings does it say have an extra owner profile and when i click it it says acess denied.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

If you're running as a limited user, you won't be allowed to view other users documents.

gamer105 August 30th, 2006 11:49 AM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

The profile im being forced to use by windows right now is an admin account it's just that i can't view my original one because it was password protected so all i need is a way for windows to ask me the password to view that folder and then its all good but i dont know how.

Or if there password protected, right?

marvinmatthew August 30th, 2006 11:50 AM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

No, if you were logged in as an admin, you could see them, even if they were password protected.

gamer105 August 30th, 2006 11:55 AM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Thats messed up though cause i just created an admin account and i still coudn't see the documents of my previous account, the acount that i was on when i started this problem.

I know for a fact though than when i boot into safe mode im allowed to access an un password protected account simply called administrator.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

ok a semi hackers trick to get on to locked up systems is.

1 go to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config"
2 delete the "SAM" files (anyfile named SAM)

this will clear all passwords and set defalt administrator as the main username and pass well there is none.

gamer105 August 30th, 2006 12:09 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Alrighty but will this enable me to see it on the log in screen because i cant even see my former acount on my login screen.

That doesnt matter actually though because i can just drag and drop my files from there into there and so on.

Edit: Damn it just told me that the sam file is being used by another program or person

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Restart your computer, it sounds as if your other account is still logged in.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

mm did you make your files privet? if so this screwed mroe up than helped lol

Nemmerle August 30th, 2006 02:01 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Assuming that you've made the files private, what may have happened is the files are still there but the account they're associated with is screwed, you may have installed windows over itself which has been known to lock the profiles of the old installation.
The only way I found to get around this was to boot up another OS from CD and then move the files to a new folder.

FN_lewrbm69 August 30th, 2006 02:43 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

yep by deleating the sam file the encryption for the privet folders are now locked unless u are good with codeing.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

AH FUCK!

Well yes i did indeed make the files private, however as i said my computer did not let me delete the SAM files so im assuming that you, FN_lewrbm69, know someway of using the SAM files to get my junk back.

As for booting up the OS from another CD im assuming i have to call my computer manufacturer get the cds and boot up and do what just what you said Nem.

Im just pissed about loosing all of my music but hey at least usb ports work again.

Nemmerle August 30th, 2006 05:01 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

That's not quite what I meant considering in most cases you can't boot windows from CD. I meant you'd have to get an OS that can boot from CD like Knoppix, (free to download thankfully, you just have to burn it out to disk.) And use that to get the files.

gamer105 August 30th, 2006 05:09 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Am i going to have to use the OS though, or is there someway to retrieve the files and just go back to using XP.

there is but it is hard as hell to do online you can do linux in a 2ed partition and recover them like that. but it is ezer to rip them from your CD you bought them from. and redo the OS there for your sake lost.

i do this for a living reciver lost data fix OSs and build computer to order.

and i guess the account you are trying to deleat the file from dos ento have admin rights, so you will not beable to do it, you wil haft to hook the drive up to a second computer an log in under the seconds computers admin and go in to the hard drive and delete the sam files.

but since the files you want you are dead in the water to put is lightly

Because it boots from CD you use the OS once to move the files out of the folder they're in to a folder that isn't restricted and then you reboot without the CD in the drive and start windows as normal.
There's even a handy FAQ about it here:

Sounds good Nem :), thanks for the help though FN_lewrbm69, and everyone else.

Allthough id like to know if i have admin access or not because we settled that i cant open the old profile because it i set the documents to private but at the same time i have the ability to create users with limited or admin access and when i did that, even for the new admin i created i still got stupid messages like the contents of this folder ar hidden even though, even though it flat out gave me an option to view them. It seems like im admin though but i just cant access my old profile.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Go to the control pannel,
switch to classic view
Open the administrative tools,
Open computer management.
You should see a tree structure on the right, expand the one that says 'local users and groups'
Click on the users folder.
Find the username you're using at the moment and double click it
Open the 'member of' tab.
That should tell you whether you're an admin or not.

gamer105 August 30th, 2006 05:37 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

I didnt see the tree structure.

Nemmerle August 30th, 2006 05:39 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Alright, there should be a row of buttons along the top of the window, the one next to the folder with an arrow in it (just to the right I think) should be the show/hide tree structure button. Try that.

gamer105 August 30th, 2006 05:42 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

O wait no sorry what i meant is i didnt see the local users and groups folder, option, or whatever it is.

Thanks again your being very very helpfull.

Nemmerle August 30th, 2006 05:46 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

You probably need to expand the system tools part of it then in order to see that local users and groups folder. Been so long since I played around in there I've forgoten what it was set up like the first time I used it.

He's saything that he thinks that he's done all he can for you, and tells you to reinstall the OS if all else fails.

Did you try at all pressing ctrl alt delete twice on the login screen? It worked for me when I wanted to get onto one of my accounts.

marvinmatthew August 31st, 2006 04:05 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

I would guess that pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL on the login screen would just cause his computer to restart.

Unless the task manager is already running in the background once you've got to the login screen.

Marine Sniper15 August 31st, 2006 04:15 PM

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Actually a login screen pops up and you can pick which account you want to login to. I found it really handy to get into accounts that are not shown on the login screen, like the admin account for me.

Re: Have password to owner in XP but cant loggin

Well, good to see you resolved your problem. Might have happened sooner if I come across this thread like a week ago.

Anyway, for what it's worth...

The files from the previous install would not have been accessible even to an Administrator, at least by default. A new user would have to take ownership of such files, which only an Adminsitrator can do. For anybody else with a similar problem or if you run into this again, check these links...
