Quite a while ago, we had a pretty bad thunder storm here in the UK but I thought nothing of it and had gone to bed, leaving the computer on. The next day I am awaken by my brother who informs me that he cannot turn the computer back on. (He needed some file from my comp). I popped open the case and took a look. Obviously I had not taken anything out or replaced anything because it was working fine before.
I thought that maybe the PSU had fried due to the storm, (despite having surge protective extension plugs) so I tested it in my brothers computer. It fired up with no problems. Next I thought it could be either the CPU or the motherboard. However, the motherboard light does still light up. I have replaced the CPU with a new one, and still there is no spark upon pressing the power on button. No other lights come on, no fans spin, nothing.
So now im at a complete loss. I dont know what to do next other than replace the motherboard, but I dont want to do this if its not needed.
If any other information is needed, please do ask for it.
Did you by any chance leave a USB modem or a router connected to your PC? Chances are the surge travelled up the phone lines, through the modem/router and into your PC via USB or a LAN port.
