PC does not spark up First, the specs: AMD 64bit 3000+ (2.0ghz) ASUS K8N4-E 1GB RAM Nvidia 7800GT Maxtor 80GB HDD (primary) Maxtor 160GB HDD (secondary) Nothing is overclocked Quite a while ago, we had a pretty bad thunder storm here in the UK but I thought nothing of it and had gone to bed, leaving the computer on. The next day I am awaken by my brother who informs me that he cannot turn the computer back on. (He needed some file from my comp). I popped open the case and took a look. Obviously I had not taken anything out or replaced anything because it was working fine before. I thought that maybe the PSU had fried due to the storm, (despite having surge protective extension plugs) so I tested it in my brothers computer. It fired up with no problems. Next I thought it could be either the CPU or the motherboard. However, the motherboard light does still light up. I have replaced the CPU with a new one, and still there is no spark upon pressing the power on button. No other lights come on, no fans spin, nothing. So now im at a complete loss. I dont know what to do next other than replace the motherboard, but I dont want to do this if its not needed. If any other information is needed, please do ask for it. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Ashley |
Re: PC does not spark up Just because the motherboard "lights up", doesn't necessarily mean it's working. I'm pretty certain you'll find it's fried. (And yeah, those storms were pretty intense. I was going up the M5 at the time. -_- Bloody weather.) |
Re: PC does not spark up Oh yeah, I do know that. I just wasnt sure if it is indeed the motherboard. (lol yeah, was incredible) |
Re: PC does not spark up The only thing that will stop it booting that you havn't tried is the mobo. |
Re: PC does not spark up Guess my next purchase will be a mobo. I thought these surge extension plugs are supposed to cut off in situations like this? But then, im no electrician. Thanks for the help people. |
Re: PC does not spark up Did you by any chance leave a USB modem or a router connected to your PC? Chances are the surge travelled up the phone lines, through the modem/router and into your PC via USB or a LAN port. |
Re: PC does not spark up Yes, everything plugged in to my pc was turned on. Thats a USB cable modem and a LAN router, both of which also go through the surge protective plugs. *edit* I would like to know how it happens actually, quite curious. |
Re: PC does not spark up O Damn seems like your mother board got fired have yu tried replacing the motherboard? |
Re: PC does not spark up That will be the next thing I do. Ive deffinately learned a lesson :) |
