Re: Which graphics card??!

Come to think of it, that PCI X1300 that was posted about a while back might be faster than the AGP 9550 that he reccommends? I'm thinking the budget card of today should give a low-mid range card from 2 or 3 years ago a good beating. And if the X1300 sucks balls, then what does a 9550 do? Just a thought... :)

Re: Which graphics card??!

It's done! I ordered the graphics card and RAM on newegg.com just a few minutes ago! Thanks EVERYONE for EVERYTHING!! I might just have one more, one more ( I hope) question about how to install the drivers onto the computer from the burned cd (whether you just click a button or whatever), but besides that, finito!

Well, the X1300Pro comes just short of an X700Pro on the benchmark front so...yeah. :lookaround:

I doubt the PCI edition would be much slower. Perhaps roughly equivalent to an X300.

Re: Which graphics card??!

I got them today! I am installing them tonight! Everything seems right.:)

I did get a "bonus CD" called ATI's Bonus DVD Vol. 2...it has game demos which I don't want but it also has some stuff that seems important like:
  • PowerDirector 3 SE Plus CD Key: PW496H4654147374
  • Power2Go 4 CD Key: PP39468293314586
  • PowerBackup Trail
Are those nessesary or just junk? All I want is the graphics card, the RAM, and the games to all run smoothly, no crap.

Thanks.

Re: Which graphics card??!

The big one with the big, fat, ugly black heatsink on it is your graphics card. I'm not sure what your other one is, doesn't seem to have enough sockets for a sound card, but it doesn't really matter.

In the second pic, it does look like RAM but I've never seen anything like that...

Okay. I thought something was fishy about the RAM...
There is only one notch looking thing on the right side of the slot with the current graphics card in it, and it appears that it moves side to side, not up and down. How do I get this big thing out?

And there is a chord that connects the graphics card (the chord is a blueish color near the end), do I keep this is connect it to the new one?

Re: Which graphics card??!

We have one RAM stick in!

UPDATE: We have both RAm sticks in!

Dinner, and then we tackle the graphics card.

Re: Which graphics card??!

We have run into a problem!

In the manuel it says, "Connect the 4-pin cable of the Power Extension to the connector provided at the corner of the graphics card."

We were able to connect one end of the cable to the graphics card...BUT, it says to connect the other end "to the power supply of your computer system." I know I am a complete n00b, but what the heck is the power supply and where is it? We see a gray box inside the computer, but we see NO socket to insert the cable. There are a number of multi-colored chords going into this gray box. This gray box able has a chord coming from the back of the computer to our surge protector, so this makes us assume this is the power supply that the manuel is talking about.

So....what is the power supply??

Re: Which graphics card??!

I'm assuming it's a molex extension cable in which case you want one of the 4 (red-black-black-yellow) wire plugs that looks like this: http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/agcomm/...ages/molex.jpg

And yes the PSU (Power Supply Unit) is that box that has the power cable on the back and a load of cables on the inside for the components.

We have that, we just don't know where to plug it in to...

Re: Which graphics card??!

Huh? There will be a number of of those coming out of the PSU (hopefully you have one spare) and you plug it into the socket on the graphics card. The thing that came with the card is just an extension cable, it doesn't do anything else.

utrythinkinof1 July 13th, 2006 05:24 PM

Re: Which graphics card??!

I don't understand your post. You are saying that this cable is just an extension chord, but then you say that you should plug it into the graphics card.....??

Re: Which graphics card??!

Agh.

You see the big box that the power cord goes into?

It has a load of multi-coloured cables coming out of it?

You see that they all have plugs on the end?

Some of those plugs are the 4 wire design I showed you earlier?

...do I really need to tell you to plug one of them into the socket on the graphics card?

Okay, okay, okay. I think we have it now. I will tell you what happens when we restart the computer.

If it's not plugged in properly you'll know. The alarm on a 6800 is...loud.

Re: Which graphics card??!

YES! We got the graphics card installed and we installed one of the drivers from the burned CD. The second driver however, needs Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0, which has a link to the interner, which as you know, that computer doesn't have, is this driver nessesary?

And thanks a bunch for helping me through this process and tolerating me, when I get frustrated....:lookaround: :D

Second driver? What's it called?

Re: Which graphics card??!

Erm...that isn't a driver. I assumed you meant you had two drivers on the CD?

Aristotle13 July 13th, 2006 07:40 PM

Re: Which graphics card??!

correction, Microsoft.net framework facilitates the rest of the driver download install, and yes you will need it to download that driver. Just go to your moms computer, and download MS Frameworks. v1.1, and while your at it download v3 as well, for any future driver installs.

This would be a ton easier if you had a thumbdrive rather than having to burn it all on CD's. But that's for another class/time.
