Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

Nvidia release their latest ambition 'Quad Sli'

It a waste of money if you ask me! Not one are you not goin to need to have that good GFX until 2007/2008 but its going to cost a fortune to put 4 great cards into those 4 silly PCI-EX slots ! :uhm:

What do you think?

I think it won't be long till their is proprietary PSU specifically built JUST for video cards! Dual PSU in a gaming rig.

"sweet, dual PSU, is that your server..."

"no dude, that's my gaming rig..."

Yes i am sure that they will soon 2! They will need to unless they some how make 1000W PSUs ;)

Uh... to late dude. They have had 1 KW PSU's for a little bit now. But I haven't seen alot on "gaming" rigs. Mostly used for servers with multiple HDD's.

Raasclot March 8th, 2006 09:13 AM

Re: Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

ok, have they lol :) sorry! lol 2kw lol ;)

Aristotle13 March 8th, 2006 09:17 AM

Re: Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

yeah, but still, whiskey tango foxtrot

1 kw JUST to run your gaming rig!!!! That's ludicris! You'll have the feds over at your house because they think you have some POT crop growing in your garage or something!

wow, look at the date... March 7.

Just goes to show...

Technology...

if your just thinking about it... it's already been done.

with the path that our HW is going, it shouldn't amaze me that this was already predicted, designed and implemented. People/companies that pick up on that quickly will benefit.

Raasclot March 8th, 2006 09:31 AM

Re: Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

WOW, it goes so fast! I mean 2years ago we only had the GHeForce FX and/or 6series!

Chocu1a March 8th, 2006 09:40 AM

Re: Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

Yeah, I know, It evolves so fast. There is no way a console user can say these "next gen" consoles are going to be cutting edge for more than 1 year. IN one years time, the phys-x cards will be common place, ddr2 will be ultra low latency, & all processors will be dual-core( with games optimised just for that). My wife tells me I can't afford to keep up. It gets so damn expensive.

yeah, tell me about it. And with what we are forced to sell our used HW for, your almost better off keeping them or giving them to relatives.

And I thought fixing cars, fishing and golfing was my expensive hobbies! I may have to drop one of them just to keep up!

Yes I totally agree!

Whats phys-x cards?

Quad SLI is already available. So are redundant PSUs specifically for graphics cards. Click Here.

Chocu1a March 8th, 2006 09:48 AM

Re: Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

Its a dedicated physics processor . It takes care of game physics, much like the way the graphics card takes care of graphics. BFG & Asus will be the first to implement them. They are add ons.

ok man, thanks 4 the update! Its officially released tommorow though :P

Yes, about how much do they cost?

Rookie March 8th, 2006 09:56 AM

Re: Quad Sli is Coming Tomorrow!

Around £500 each. They're very limited, only 2000 examples were available as of the launch date.

Allright, there's a lot of things here upon reading that are kind of cheesing me off.

#1) The PhysX unfortunately at this point, is still on the ropes; yeah they've got it ready, but there are no games available that can use it.

#2) Further complicating the matter, AMD and Intel are both gearing up to start rolling out the first gen Quad-Core CPU's by the end of the year. With that many processing threads, another one dedicated to just physics seems a little stupid now doesn't it?

#3) I don't care what anyone says, YOU WON'T BE NEEDING A DEDICATED VIDEO PSU ANYTIME SOON!!

MaxPC tested that 2-7800GT's-in-one card by Asus, and they ran it with a PC Power and Cooling 510 deluxe SLI power supply just fine, and they ran it directly connected to the supply, not with the dedicated power brick hooked up.

You'll notice both the 850 and the 1000W supplies that PC P&C makes are of the SSI formfactor. This means that they are meant for high-end servers that are on 24/7/365 and have massive RAID arrays along with racks of Tape Drives running constant backups.

At the rate CPU power consumption is dropping, it should about balance out the growing absurdity of GPU's. In any case, I think we'll see a completely different way of handling graphics before ANYONE in the home market would ever have to plunk down $500 for a 1K PSU

Been busy Raasclot. 4 cards for the new UT2007 game, obviously. And soon GPUs will be in the mobos instead of on the graphics cards. Funny, CPUs are faster and cooler and now GPUs are faster and hotter. Funny, I would have thought faster and hotter for both. The future always hold such promise.

Actually, there are. UT2007 and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, both of which will be out relatively soon, are notable examples.

Not really. Actually, it makes perfect sense - as games get more demanding, as much burden as possible needs to be removed from the CPU. Dedicated Physics processors are a logical next step, given that most of today's games make use of ragdolls in one form or another.

If you've got a beefy enough PSU, then you have no worries. They're just included so that people using "mid-range" PSUs that might struggle with the task of running a highly integrated PCB with two nVidia 7800GT chipsets can still use the card.

I'll agree with you there. No gaming rig should need more than 700W, tops - even with the hungriest components on the market. 1KW supplies are generally for industrial applications and servers only.

Smaller is better, as they say - with smaller manufacturing processes we can look forward to lower power consumption. This is why Intel's new Conroe chip is being marketed for both Desktop and Mobile sectors, with very few modifications being made for the latter. (Apart from a different name - Merom.)

Meh, I'm still real leery about this PhysX thing...call my cynical, but I still don't see a real need for it

Oh yes, we've all heard of the Flip Chip GPU nVidia is proposing; Honestly, I think that is the WORST idea ever. Why? Because not only will we have to keep paying even MORE when we want to upgrade our GPU's, since we'll have to buy new VRAM as well which normally comes on the card itself, but there's also the issue of cross-compatibility.
Look at SLi and CrossFire now, do you really think nVidia and ATi LIKE these companies canibalizing their hardware to try and make them both run on the same platform? Nuh uh, I didn't think so.
So do you REALLY think they'll both come up with the same kind of socket for GPU's if that's the case? That's going to add up to a lot of major headaches for consumers when they have to buy a mobo that's either ATi compatible or nVidia compatible.
They'll either have to agree on something (which will happen when hell freezes over or one company buys the other) or find a better way to package or manufacture the cards so they're not so !@#$ing hot

Yes, most people have heard of heard of Integrated Graphics Processors...

But they are not on most motherboards... In fact most Motherboard's newer than 2004-05 do not even have Graphics Chipsets installed on them.

And so? Not that anyone needs it. Or probably will for 2 or 4 years. No games can take FULL advantage of 4 cards like the 7900 GTXs. More hardware to wank off, to I say.
