Looking for a new video card

Hey everyone, im looking for a new video card. Currently i have a Radeon 9600. I want to get a graphics card that can run BF2 on medium-high settings, mostly high. But i dont want to pay no more than $180.
Can anyone please tell me wich card is best for me? With my 9600 i can only run BF2 on the lowest settings. I also play CoD2, and only get around 50 FPS.

I see we have some invidia fans here hehe I myself am partial to ATI cards.

I have an ATI X700XT , it runs that game fine. I dont play BF2 regularly (I am assuming you are referring to battlefield 2) However I run battle front 2 on 1024 by 768 with high settings and it runs fine...no lag or anything, But I am also running a p4 2.8ghz processor,so that plays into it too. this card about 6 months ago ran me 174 retail...so its probably cheaper now. There are more powerful ATI cards though, but they will cost you


If you get yourself set on nvidia, stay away from anything with "FX" in the name. That series was in my opinion aweful.

Finally...MAKE SURE you get an AGP card. So many cards now are SLI, because thats the latest greatest thing(I avent been too impressed with it) , so make sure you are reading up on what you are getting.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Yes, it is true that in some situations that AGP actually outperforms PCI-E (apart from high-resolution frame rendering, where the PCI-E architecture's increased bandwidth triumphs) , however the good old AGP bus has reached a dead-end performance-wise, and is soon to be phased out completely. PCI-E is the "new kid on the block", and with an open-ended architecture, we can be sure to see it progress in leaps and bounds within the next few years. Put simply, the future lies with PCI-E, not AGP.

You guys really didn't interpret his post correctly. He currently has an AGP 9600 since there are no 9600 PCI-X cards. He has no money to buy a new cpu, motherboard and vid card. If your willing to go an extra 15 dollars, get this card:

if not, then go with either an X800GT or a 6600GT. both cards can be found for less than 180. the only diff between the X800GT and 6600GT is the x800GT has a 256 bit mem bus.

He wouldn't have to buy a new CPU...

Just a Motherboard if he was going PCI-e...Which I would recommend. But since he is strapped for cash, then he should get a 6600GT....Because it uses Shader 3.0..Or you could spend a little bit extra and grab a 6800GS for a huge performance increase.

You mean a 256 bit Memory Interface... with 256mb VRAM.
