no i dont think its overheating because whats really weird is in certain games the computer wont lock up just the game will and i can go into task manager and shut the game off. Also becuase under load its only at like 104 degrees F

i found the answer. my F$#!ing 9800pro went out. ugh. idk what im gonna do with it. idk if it would be recoverable if i got a new cooling system for it. i cant get to the signin screen for XP all i see is two yellow dots (artifacts) and im positive its the video card cuz i have a gf2mx 32mb in it and it works fine.
u think the 9800pro is recoverable?

lmfao a64 3200+ 1gb and a GF2MX 32mb (7800gtx eater)

Maybe the power supply can't handle having that video card. But if your card is physically wrecked you'll have to get another.

nvm i got it to work. theres so many issues, and im probly confusing the crap out of you guys. heres why i thought it was fried-
login screen=black screen with 2 little artifacts

with gf2mx worked but when i installed the drivers same thing happened so it was a driver conflict so its not dead (yet, stupid ati) idk about the lockups yet i think my video card might still be overheating or theres a driver issue with my a64

More then likely its your video card,,,, AND or powersupply. If you havent had this issue before I would check both. A power supply that isnt functioning properly can and will cause lockups....especially when more power gets drawn to it , eg a video card.

That's definately the video card. Artifacts are caused by defective memory chips and pixel pipelines in the GPU, I doubt that a power failure would affect the card in that way. As others have said, also check the wattage of your PSU against the rest of your system. Try a PSU Calculator, like this one.

Like every one here says, the 9800 pro overheats on stock/heatsink and fan. The card is dead. Go buy a 6800 GS.

well, idk. it never did this with my old rig, so maybe it could be this new cpu? (stock heatsink/fan) cuz i got my 9800pro to work again it was a driver conflict i just thought it died cuz i saw 2 little yellow artifacts when it tried to boot up. but i removed one card under it cuz maybe it was reflecting the heat back to it whats really gay is this mobo only has 2 fan connectors!

My cpu isnt that hot i dont think (40c) but thats after it locks up/and or reboots. which part could be overheating? i didnt have this problem with my ;old rig but my cpu temp. isnt that hot. please need help sometimes the computer locks up totally, sometimes it lets me go into task manager and stop the game, and sometimes it just reboots. Also i have seen that cs:s uses much more memory than with my old rig (300mb!)

please idk what to do and im getting impatient.
