locking up in games sorry for all the threads guys. but this is also an important one. Well, as you guys know, i just bought an athlon 64 3200+ and a new mobo and installed them. i put in all the drivers , etc. but whenever i play any game, itll just lock up. this is very frustrating cuz theyre brand new parts. :( please any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Re: locking up in games Could be the memory or overheating ? I'm sure the better techies will have an idea :p |
Re: locking up in games no i dont think its overheating because whats really weird is in certain games the computer wont lock up just the game will and i can go into task manager and shut the game off. Also becuase under load its only at like 104 degrees F |
Re: locking up in games i found the answer. my F$#!ing 9800pro went out. ugh. idk what im gonna do with it. idk if it would be recoverable if i got a new cooling system for it. i cant get to the signin screen for XP all i see is two yellow dots (artifacts) and im positive its the video card cuz i have a gf2mx 32mb in it and it works fine. u think the 9800pro is recoverable? lmfao a64 3200+ 1gb and a GF2MX 32mb (7800gtx eater) |
Re: locking up in games Maybe the power supply can't handle having that video card. But if your card is physically wrecked you'll have to get another. |
Re: locking up in games nvm i got it to work. theres so many issues, and im probly confusing the crap out of you guys. heres why i thought it was fried- login screen=black screen with 2 little artifacts with gf2mx worked but when i installed the drivers same thing happened so it was a driver conflict so its not dead (yet, stupid ati) idk about the lockups yet i think my video card might still be overheating or theres a driver issue with my a64 |
Re: locking up in games More then likely its your video card,,,, AND or powersupply. If you havent had this issue before I would check both. A power supply that isnt functioning properly can and will cause lockups....especially when more power gets drawn to it , eg a video card. |
Re: locking up in games That's definately the video card. Artifacts are caused by defective memory chips and pixel pipelines in the GPU, I doubt that a power failure would affect the card in that way. As others have said, also check the wattage of your PSU against the rest of your system. Try a PSU Calculator, like this one. |
Re: locking up in games Like every one here says, the 9800 pro overheats on stock/heatsink and fan. The card is dead. Go buy a 6800 GS. |
well, idk. it never did this with my old rig, so maybe it could be this new cpu? (stock heatsink/fan) cuz i got my 9800pro to work again it was a driver conflict i just thought it died cuz i saw 2 little yellow artifacts when it tried to boot up. but i removed one card under it cuz maybe it was reflecting the heat back to it :) whats really gay is this mobo only has 2 fan connectors! :uhoh: My cpu isnt that hot i dont think (40c) but thats after it locks up/and or reboots. which part could be overheating? i didnt have this problem with my ;old rig but my cpu temp. isnt that hot. please need help sometimes the computer locks up totally, sometimes it lets me go into task manager and stop the game, and sometimes it just reboots. Also i have seen that cs:s uses much more memory than with my old rig (300mb!) please idk what to do and im getting impatient. |
Re: locking up in games It could be a number of things, but one of the more likely causes is a problem with your RAM. Try running MemTest86, if there's a problem with your RAM then that will find it. It may take some time to complete though. I assume you've done the obligatory Adware/Spyware/Malware checks? As for your video card, I still have my doubts. Artifacts are most definately a sign of overheating. You say you updated your graphics card drivers, you weren't by any chance running Catalyst 3.8 beforehand were you? |
Re: locking up in games If you have more the one memory stick you could take one out and try playing a game with less ram and see how that goes. |
Re: locking up in games i really dont think its my video card now. i mean i saw those 2 artifacts, but i NEVER see any artifacts anywhere else ever. and why would it just start overeheating all of the sudden? as for testing the ram, my dad said he thinks its the ram also. Thanks for the help guys, im tryin that right now. Now im gettin some real answers :bows: |
Re: locking up in games What was your power supply? Your card is dead, if you want a card a bit better than your 9800 pro then get a 6600gt, or if you want something much better, and definitly worth it get an x800 xl, i assume your on agp. |
my card cant be dead, cuz it still plays cs:s but i havent checked if it stills locks up. as for memtest, i cant get it to work. my psu is 450watts. I tried the memory thing (switched out my ram and put in my moms geil 1 gig stick) and still locks up. please help i cant play any games and im an addict :( ok sorry guys for triple posting, but i know the source of the problem now!!! when i put cs:s into a window, i was monitoring my temps, and none of them went past 45degrees Celcius. and then later when i was playing it locked up and cs:s went black and then the VPU RECOVERY box came up!!! it said that the video card didnt respond to the drivers or something. so maybe u guys can really help me fix the problem now??? i already changed the agp to 4x which stopped it from restarting or locking up now it just crashes my games. i also changed the htt multiplier to 600mhz. so plz any help i need it so bad. Re: locking up in games Why is your HTT Multiplier set to 600MHz?? Isn't your Video Card 8X AGP Aswell? |
Re: locking up in games i set it to 600mhz to see if it would work but it didnt. it was set to auto first. and yes its agp 8x, but i wanted to try 4x to see if that worked, but that didnt fix it either. |
Re: locking up in games 600MHz Multiplied by what?? It is usually 5...If you didn't lower it then that is bad. |
Re: locking up in games no its not x5....its x3 atm. but do u have any solutions to my problem? |

and if your getting a VPU recovery box stating the card is not responding, i would say your video card is going out on you. try completely uninstalling the ATI drivers and install the newest ones from ATI.com and see if you still have this problem. |
Re: locking up in games 1. the vpu recovery thing only came up once 2. ill set my htt back to auto. 3.ive tried the driver thing already. 4.my card cant be dying, it was perfect until i got these new parts. there must be something wrong i think the processors high FSB (1ghz) is freaking out my video card causing it to lock up. but thats my opinion. I really need help guys, like, alot. |
Re: locking up in games wow....im getting alot of replies :uhm: |

Checklist. You: _ Ran memtest86+ though at least four full loops? _ Ran the prime95 torture tests for 15-20 minutes each (at least)? _ Tried each piece of hardware on another box, known to be good (or at least thought of it, if you haven't the access)? _ Removed all the new hardware verified that your video card still works in it's old system? _ Tested the rails on your PSU? _ Checked all connections (like, oh, I don't know... you video card's power cable)? _ Removed any and all trace of the GeForce2 MX what was in your system? |

Memtest86 doesnt work for me, haent tried prime 95 yet. I have no clue whats wrong, im gonna like blow up. it has to have to do something with the southbridge controller but idk what sigh.........come on guys please im going to like die |
