Socket 939 is being replaced with M2, which will have 940 pins. Note that this platform will not be pin-compatible with the current socket 940.
Now then, there's nothing wrong with building a socket 939 system right now; it will continue to be viable for probably three or four years to come, just not as top-flight as it is now. Practically speaking, peripherals aren't likely to change. That is to say that anything you put into a socket 939 system other than the CPU or memory will be compatible with socket M2 (which will use DDR2 memory).
So no, if you need a new computer now, then go ahead and build a socket 939. Waiting becomes an indefinite cycle. If you already have a socket 939 rig, however... I'd give it a pass. |
